Dead Black and White Monitor?
« on: August 27, 2005, 11:28:31 pm »
I've got a Super Breakout machine with a TEC TM-600 or TM-623 B/W monitor inside.  After transport, I stopped getting both picture and game sounds.  I think they're unrelated issues, so I'd like to figure out the monitor problem first.  When I power the game, I get a typical glow from the neck area.  The noticable problem is the blue sparking I see around the anode cap.  I suspect that this is either a bad connection there or just a bad sign for the monitor's future.  Any input (and if things look grim, any leads to a replacement?)

It's possible the rubber anode cup isn't seated correctly (i.e. the metal prongs or tabs are not in the hole.

If it is seated properly then this monitor has ewither been near the salt water of the ocean, near high humidity, or in a garage or basement that's been/is damp. In this case the arcing is actually using the dust/dirt and moisture to arc & etch the glass! If VERY CAREFUL cleaning with 99% rubbing alcohol (with the power off and tube discharged!) in a two inch radius around the rubber cup doesn't help then you're in for some serious time in filling the arc tracks in the glass with some kind of non-conductive high voltage 'filler' like silicone glue.

Sounds like a treat - I'll have to take a look when I'm feeling frisky.  Thanks for the input.

Wow, I didn't know about the arc etching... that's funky.

I was there yesterday when we discovered this.  The arcs are a very pretty shade of blue, like a tiny angry Palpatine.

I've done some more reading and get the hint that this is a crap monitor (and possibly dangerous too!)  Would it be more worthwhile to replace it entirely?  If so, with what and where do I find it?

That's the real issue if you replace it.  What do you replace it with?  Are you really going to find a 25+ year old b/w monitor that is better?  It's hard enough to find a b/w television now, nevermind an arcade monitor.
