My SB Auction Haul (06SEP - VT2 Showcase Pics Added)
« on: August 27, 2005, 03:54:20 pm »
Was at the Starburst (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) auction today and ended up with:

- Die Hard (going to convert it to a JAMMA gun game cabinet)
- Golden Tee 2K (well, it's for my sister-in-law)
- Virtua Tennis 2 GD-ROM in a 33" showcase cab (very sweet)

Some interesting deals were there to be had ... a T2 Judgement Day went for C$25 right at the end ... while some crappy TMNT Turtles in Time in what looked like an original Gauntlet cab (with homemade HANDPAINTED CPO) went for $100.

Will post pix when I pickup on Monday.

Cheers.

Congrads!!  I couldn't make it to this auction... Was there any twin racing games??

How much did you pay for the Virtua Tennis??

Today was the day of the racer ... Final Lap 2 (twin), bunch of California Speeds (3, IIRC), 18 Wheeler. Sega Rally 2 (50" ... was bigger than my van!), World Rally, Steering Champ, OffRoadChallenge.

Corey or Dave should have the prices up shortly... I followed until The Kid's partner outbid me on a couple of garbage cabs (great projects, but worth about C$75 ... he topped at $100 twice), then got frustrated and bought the bloody Die Hard plasticab.

[EDIT: The Kid was actually of town, so only his partner was there and I think I was the only one he really messed up]

I paid C$675 for the VT2 ... NAOMI GD-ROM with sweet 33" monitor ... mm ... BUT a non-GD-ROM, less-nice (e.g. previous SF2 with button plugs) version also in a 33" Dynamo showcase went in the 200s earlier in the auction ... I backed off at $225 because I wanted this one (and apparently so did somebody else, hence the $675). Lots of showcase cabs (10 or more).

I can finally start bidding on GD-ROM auctions ... and maybe sell my (now spare) other NAOMI system ...

Next auction is October 1 ... maybe see you then.

Cheers.

PS -- No love testers this time, but there was a coffee table.

The board is worth as much as they paid for the whole game.

Older big drivers often sell for very little. Too old to make money, (or at least no ops are going to waste a good twin driver location on a 15 year old unit), and MOST collectors don't have the proper basement (sliding glass door that opens into the outside), to install a game of that size in their house.

Yes, but I do....  The first time in 3 years I don't go to the auction and there is a game there that I really wanted.

ARGH!!!

After fighting with my Die Hard to get it down the stairs (stupid metal base!), I power it up to ... horizontal line, high-pitched whine and a bit of smoke ... unplugged it, swore several times and grabbed a beer.

Guess I won't be playing that tonight.

DOUBLE ARGH!!!

It turns out that I forgot to sweep the cab for loose crap. There were some fairly hefty screws stuck up in the top of the cabinet (in the monitor mounts). Stupid ... although I doubt I would have seen them without taking the front of the cabinet off (which I have now done and found another screw jammed in there).

I can't get a good look at the monitor without pulling it out (and I am not going to do anything like that today ... one stupid mistake is enough for one day), but stuck my camera in and got a picture ... not liking the look of that coil.

Sigh ... now I really have to learn about monitor repair.

Cheers.

Hey, at least you know EXACTLY what is wrong with it. That is going to be a really simple repair.

Finally some pics ... well a pic of the Die Hard to be followed by a pic of the VT2, which is on the truck on the way here right now.

Will post the VT2 once they drop it in the driveway.

 ;D

I found the core from the coil and concluded that it couldn't have broken off due to a falling bolt .. was probably already broken and the last op just futzed it into place -- I put it back together and it works, but I'm going to pull the board and replace the whole coil just to be safe.

Cheers.

OK ... the nice guys at Starburst dropped my VT2 showcase in the driveway and I promptly disassembled it and moved it down to the basement (WARNING: 33" monitors are bloody heavy), where it now sits in at least 6 seperate pieces, waiting patiently for me to reassemble it.

Here are the pics prior to disassembly ...

The whole shebang ... sadly the marquee is not going to fit on top of the machine in the basement ...

The innards  ... also opened up the CP and found that it used to have a trackball inside (Virtua Golf, anybody??) ...

And a closeup of the CP top (forgot to take a pic of the bottom of the CP).

Hopefully I'll get it all back together tonight and have some action shots!

Cheers.

EDIT: I think I'm going to lay off of buying nonstandard cabinets ... the last two have been a real pain ... normal cabs just go straight down the stairs nicely ...I like nicely.

Monitor is crisp, clear with no burn. And HEAVY!

I absolutely love the cab, but was heavy and more than I wanted to pay (thankfully the guy I was bidding against is a really nice guy ... he REALLY wanted it and I wasn't letting go).

How high are the screen control and brightness set?  Every megalo cab I've seen at auction, if it wasn't trashed, had a monitor with 90% of its tube life gone.

Pretty much centre dial ... thankfully (no access to those before I bought it).

Oh man, don't buy a high $ machine without examining the contents!  You wouldn't believe some of the jury rigged crap you'll find inside a cabinet at auction.

Problem is no access to the back of most of these machines at Starburst auctions ... I was able to get a look at the main board and GD-ROM drive (coz the back door was already off), but nothing else ... remote for the monitor was stashed inside the head of the showcase.

Cheers.

Don't know about the Starburst auctions, but at every auction I've been to, the keys are often in the lock.  If they're not, you can try to find them.  If you can't find them, you probably don't bid.  don't be ashamed to do what you have to do to look hard at the machine.

Cords are usually accessible (outlets on the other hand can be tough to find). The only machine I haven't been able to power up was a GT98 at the last auction.

Is there fight for outlets if they are limited?

Sometimes, you'll plug your cord in, walk about 30 feet away to try out a machine, plug it in, nothing happens. You look back and see your cord is unplugged and someone else's is!

That's when you go all Indiana Jones on them and send a wave down your cord that causes the plug to slash them in the head.
