Daphne & Dragons Lair....
« on: August 26, 2005, 12:32:08 pm »
OK - I really want to have Dragon's Lair on my cabinet that is 85% finished (waiting on coin door and need to paint).  I have found the Daphne site and have been trying to find a source for the Dragon's Lair Mpeg files needed to play.

I found this DVD copy that supposedly can be ripped to use with daphne.

http://www.digitalleisure.com/gamesdlseries.html#dl    ($30 ! - OUCH)

I have yet to find out if this DVD-ROM is an exact copy of the laser disc arcade version (which is what I want).  Anyone know if its a copy of the arcade game or have another source for the MPEG files?

Thanks

-EDIT-
OK found something at digital leisure that claims this -

Digital Leisure are the best source for the videos.  Their quality is superb.. and yes, it's very easy to convert the DVD video to something that's compatible with Daphne.

Got my DL and SA games from egameuniverse (ebay) 9.99 + 11.00 shipping (I know shipping ridiculous) but overall price pretty good.

The 20th anniv. edition game has the contents you want and then some...  You will be able to play the enhanced edition of DA with the correct daphne rom set.  See daphne website for how to setup the emulator.

BTW... you don't really even need daphne if you are just interested in DA and or SA... the digital leisure game is fine on its own.

If you can, get the 20th anniversary edition DVD-VIDEO version, like someone said earlier, it has everything you want plus some extra scenes that were taken out of the original.

You can use a program called DVD2DAPH and it will convert the DVD files to work with Daphne.

Enjoy,

Looks like eBay has many of the "Dragons Lair PLAYSTATION 2 DVD" discs available.  Will this work?  It appears that the 20th Anniversary DVD-VIDEO version is completely barren from eBay.

However, the 20th Anniversary CD-ROM (4 CD) version IS available for $10 + $10 shipping.  I assume that will work, right?

Thanks for any help!

You do -not- want the CD version.  The video is inferior to the DVD.  In fact, I believe it's MPEG1.

You'd just be wasting your money.

I've seen both of the CD versions. The arcade accurate CD-rom (published by Select soft) looks terrible. However, the 20th anniversary edition looks much better. Still, I'm sure it's not as good as the DVD version.

The CD version is MPEG-1 and the picture quality is bad... especially when viewed on a 27" arcade monitor... If you are running it in a tiny little window on a PC its barely OK.  I made the mistake of ordering the CD version first... had to get the DVD.

all better now.

I only know of one place where you can still get it new but it cost around $34.00 and that is not including shipping.

These guys have 4 more copies of the 20th Anniversary DVD-VIDEO version available.  They had 5, but then I bought one.   ;D

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6420937927

It's an eBay store with a "Buy It Now" of $30.86.

Can the 20th anniversary be launched in an "arcade mode" from a standard MAME frontend, and play like the real game?  Or is Daphne needed for that?

Since switching my cabinet to Windows, I am now interested in adding some of the laserdisk games.

Thanks,
Wade

The 20th Anniv. DVD cannot be launched from a front end... its expected to run on a DVD player.  The 20th Anniv. CD maybe... but its picture quality totally stinks.

If you get the 20th Anniv. DVD, you can run DVD2Daph.exe and convert it to run with the Daphne emulator the way you want.

Okay, cool.  That is what I was thinking I needed to do (get the DVD, then encode it and use Daphne to play).

Thanks!

As far as the DVD's on Overstock:

The quality will be just as good and dvd2daph.exe will work on them... the only thing is you may miss some deleted scenes (I'm not really too sure about this... check the daphne message boards to be sure)...
