Arcade Monitor VS TV??

What are the advantages of using an Arcade Monitor in your MAME cab over a TV using a ArcadeVGA card?

I have a street fighter 2 arcade machine and I just made a Mame cabinet to add to my collection. For the mame machine I used a 27 inch JVC tv using the component connection. When comparing the street fighter 2 arcade monitor with the tv I can not tell the difference. If you use a TV make sure you use component input/output and not S-video if you want that authentic arcade look. S-video is not as clear and was very blurry when I compared it to component. If you do use a TV I recommend the JVC AV-27530. It is a 27 inch TV that has component-in. It has the speakers located on the bottom so it is only 25.5 inches wide so it can easily fit in a cabinet. When unplugged it will automaticaly turn back to the previous input you had it set on before you unplugged it. This is nice because you probably wont have the remote handy at all times. I bought mine at Frys for about 200 bucks. Another advatage to using a TV is the price. Arcade monitors are usually pretty expensive unless you can find a used one. The only problem with buying a used one is it usually has a little bit of burn-in.

If you do decide to use a TV with component input, you will need to get a video card that had a DVI out and get the DVI to component adapter. With a Non-Hi definition TV with component you will have to set the dip-switches on the dvi to component adapter to 480p for it to work.

Thanks for the reply! I live in the UK, so i dont know if we have that JVC model over here, or even if we Component-In?? I think its either S-Video or Scart is the main connection types over here, which i dont surppose there is an adaptor for that with a Graphics card?

If you live in the UK then get a TV with SCART.  It supposedly is exactly like an arcade monitor.   I am not sure whether you can use a standard video card or an Arcade VGA card.  I think the Arcade VGA card would be the way to go.   You might ask a little more on this forum but, you will be able to run all the arcade resolutions with and Arcade VGA card.   Otherwise,  the JVC with component is the way to go.  That is what I use as well and I am happy with it.   I am limited to the 640x432 resolution though.

i currently use a tv using an arcadevga card and a vga to scart cable that i made from diagrams i found on this forum.. i also connected a 5v power cable from the pc power supply to a pin on the scart connector so it makes the tv trip over to av/scart input when you turn the pc on, aslong as you get a tv that will power on when you flick the mains switch to the cab.. then you never need to access the tv or use the remote ever again..

o and the picture is as sharp as a button .. it leaps and bounds better than compostite or s-vhs, as ive tried them all and they were generally poor.

if your not into cap kits and soldering irons and degauze coils ect ect i would opt for a scart tv instead of a arcade monitor

Is it best to leave the TV in its case or take it out?? Just wounder which way is easier for it to be mounted into the cab, as i have an arcade monitor in there already

well i think it all depends on the tv..  mine was black with no speakers on the side so it fit snugly into the cab without de-casing it.. i just sat it on a wooden shelf and droped the bezel back in

this obviously wouldnt be the case with all tv's though as some are damm ugly

I think i would have to de-case a TV if i got one, because of the monitor mounting polls already in the cab, only problem i may come across is getting a TV that has the right sized frame inside the case, so that it fits!!

Would a VGA to component adapter cable work with this TV as well?

Nevermind, I think I would need one of these to hook a computer directly up to a component-in TV.  Correct me if I'm wrong.
