Quiet room

I have decided not to move into my motorhome and instead to stay in my apartment. I tested it out on a vacation, then I ran the numbers a few more times, and I really wouldn't save THAT much money (like $100 a month, if I was to pick up a roommate again than my apartment would actually be cheaper).

The biggest thing I disliked about my apartment was the level of noise coming from outside and below. I am a day sleeper and I get woken up A LOT.

My roommate just moved out, so I am switching to his bedroom. It is smaller than the one I have been using, but it is a lot quieter (faces the rear of the building, so I don't have people standing under my window talking all the time), but it is still pretty noisy.

Any ideas about quieting up the room? The window is large, thin and rattly, the people underneath like to yell a lot as well.

I have a bunch of surplus carpet I got from my hotel when they redid one of the hallways, so I thought about laying down like 3 or 4 layers of carpet in that bedroom to drown out the yellers, but I am not sure what to do about the window.

My suggestion? Earmuffs and sleeping pills. But please, feel free to try something different for my own entertainment.

foam earplugs--by the time they fall out you are usually dead asleep--just hope someone doesn't make a loud noise during the "almost awake" point in your rem sleep cycle..

My ex-girlfriend lived over a bar in university--those suckers made it possible to stay over night there..

Uh, dude, you already bought and worked on the motorhome.  You keep starting projects, spending time and money on them, and then dumping them aside for something else.  This isn't helping you, it's digging you a bigger hole of bigger items that you need to maintain.  Now, instead of a little apt with some cabs, you have a bigass old motorhome and a bigass old suburban and a little trashed scooter and a LOT of wounds.

those squishy foam earplugs really work good and they dont feel weird in your ear either. on the weekends people for some reason get up in my house at like 9am, and when i didnt get in the door till 3am the night before thats annoying cause theyre loud. i sleep till noon easily with these earplugs in, also my ex used to snore and it would bug the hell out of me and when she slept over i would wear them and it was fine

They cause ear infections if you use them for long periods with any regularity.

Maybe you could become accustomed to sleeping with a certain type of background noise that could cancel some of the other noise.  It's odd, but both my roommate and myself, in college, used to sleep better with Mariah Carey's first album playing.  It drowned out the idiots on the other side of the wall.

How are the wounds coming?  You didn't go to the hospital, have you at least been keeping them clean and newly dressed?  Any signs of infection?

I have problems with noise in my apartment as well. We live next to a busy street, and there is a stop-light right outside our bedroom window. So we get to enjoy 10-20sec. of every asshat's blaring radio and drunken rants. I'm able to get away with a fan providing constant noise, but they make much more efficient "white noise" machines.

Wounds are healing up very well, I don't appear to have any infections (I seem to be REALLY resistant to infections in wounds, I don't think I have ever had one, despite the fact that I have had tons of small injuries, and I tend to pick at scabs).

How much road debris was in the wounds?  That's usually the cause of infections in things like that, missed foreign material.  Without any pain medication, I could imagine the urge to stop picking rocks out of a long wound would be pretty high.

Can you tell how much scarring you'll have?  That's where the real benefit of insurance would have been, in possibly having a plastic surgeon consulted to limit scars.

Wounds seemed to be fairly debris-free. The road it happened on was clean and in great condition.

Scarring isn't really an issue with me, I have SO MANY scars on my arms and legs already that a few more won't make much difference. As I mentioned before, I am one of those people that picks at wounds, so I have a TON of scars already (I am not nearly as bad about that as I was when I was younger).

The sections that HAVE completely healed appear to be scar-free, but I know wound on top of my right wrist will scar (my right wrist got sort of "sanded down" a fraction of an inch, that one was the only DEEP  injury, everything else just sanded off a layer or two, but the wrist sanded down enough that you could actually see that there was some missing tissue). I also have a near identical wound on my right ankle as well, but I already had a big scar there, which it seems to have sanded off!! =)

On that wrist, you likely have nerve damage now that won't show up until the scar tissue is settled.

And I NEED to get to work on that quiet room pronto. I have had two mildly-retarded women talking outside my window for 2 and a half hours now, and some idiot in another unit is playing loud music. Only got 3 hours of sleep today, I was woken up twice during that time.

Is the sound comming through the windows or walls?  If windows, do you use an open window for air, or just run an A/C.  How much would you be able to do to your place before your landlord came 'round and ripped out your liver?

Is the building exterior plaster or wood siding?

I would recommend replacing the window if you can.  I guess if its an apartment you're not really supposed to make improvements?  Maybe ask the super then about upgrading your windows, it could help with dust (air filter repacement), Noise(what you want) and Energy conservation (cheaper utility bill)

You guys should come move to St. Louis - I have this mental image of Paige based on the various exploits he's posted here.  Every so often I meet someone who miiiiiight be him and have to wonder.  The odds are about 6,000,000 to 1 based on the regional population, so, better than the lottery.

This may make me the worlds lazyest stalker.....

Physically I am late 20s, medium length brown hair, 5'10" but I have a build that makes me look shorter. I am about 240, and have that generic "not ugly, but not good looking" white guy look. I am very quiet with new people and DO NOT strike up conversations with strangers.

If you wanted to pick me out of the crowd it would best be done based on vehicles, since all 4 of my vehicles are easily identified (2 uniques and 2 rares).

Overall I am not very distinctive or memorable in person, just another quiet guy who is a bit heavy.

Replacing windows is not an option, every building has the same windows, replacing even one of mine would mean every window in every building would need to be replaced. The building is brick.

Landlord seems to be OK with some improvements and not with others. I got permission to install all the shelves I wanted (never actually installed any though), but he doesn't want tenants painting anything.

Occasionally a picture of Paige is posted. I treat those like bigfoot/ Loch Ness Monster sightings though. Could be faked, I won't believe until I see the real thing in captivity.

Personally that hiss sound works for me... I am surprised whenever I fly at night the constant drone of the engines knocks me right out. 

Also this conversation reminded me of some crappy travellodge I stayed at in Connected near Hartford.  Clearly this place was geared to truckers.  My room was on the back side of the place maybe 100yards from the interstate.  The room had these massively heavy, think dark brown curtains.  I woke up around 11am by mistake and thought it was still 4am it was so dark and quiet in the room.
