that's just one moer small thing a modchip will have to deal with.

It's most certainly not the end of hacking teh 360... how long have you been around the console scene?  :P  ;D

Practically every mod voids your warranty.. and this security feature only revolves around peripherals... it really isn't going to be a big deal IMHO.

Warranty? These things come with a warranty?  ;)

How will this affect modding in any way?  I have a modded Xbox, but that doesn't mean that I'm building homebrew Xbox controllers from scratch.  The only people this is going to affect are people who want to make 3rd-party controllers and keyboards and mice and so on.  I doubt that mod-chips are even going to address it.

But it could just be that we are doom-mongers. Microsoft say that the point of the license is to make sure that third party peripherals will get Microsoft's seal of approval and therefore offer customers "the best experience possible." Excuse our cynicism, but we'll wait and see. The proof will be in the pudding, so come November, we'll be hoping for chocolate, not a cheese board (apologies, cheese lovers!)

Thanks microsoft. what would I ever do with out Bill looking out for me.

It's anti-competitive BS like this that has put me off buying consoles in the past.

The whole PC/console divide is totally artificial anyway.

What we really need is a non-proprietary console, basically a PC with TV-out in an attractive, compact case, running something like Linux with a foolproof front end.

A more interesting question, to us anyway, would be how this would affect a person wanting to build an Xbox360 cab.

Probably not much. All we'd need to do is crack open the controller case, solder a few leads, connect the joystick/buttons, problem solved.

The hardware licensing shouldn't be a big deal unless someone cracks open a controller and finds out that somehow these things are made unlike every controller ever made before. I Don't think it'll be an issue.

The bigger issue would come from the fact that these things are supposed to be wireless controllers. You'd also have to hack the battery compartment to handle a hard-wired DC line. If they're rechargeable and use a base, that would be even more of a pain in the butt. Even still, it can be worked around.

This won't effect the modding community, OR us cab builders in the slightest.

In fact, the controllers will also be available in a wired version,

hmm, i guess what i meant is that most people who hack controllers prefer to just trash a cheap 3rd party one instead of a pricy official one, and this could put a end to cheap 3rd party controllers.

kinda reminds me of that thing nintendo did that only allowed developers to produce 5 games a year....

Ahhhhhhh

Yes, I see where your coming from.

Like I said though...

Wth competition in the console biz as strong as it is, I doubt that MS will be doing anything that jeopardizes 3rd party support. I think we will still have plenty of cheap controllers to hack.

If not... There is always the PS3. :)

Ack.....the MadCatz Wireless Microcon is the BEST Xbox controller available.  Microsoft's Controller-S is an okay controller, but not nearly as good as Gamecube's or Playstations (aside from Sony's retarded button naming scheme and analog stick placement).  The Microcon for Xbox closes the gap.  One of the best gamepads ever made.  And actually, the more I read what I wrote in the parenthesis up there the more I think I just don't much like the Playstation controller.  It is comfortable, at least.

You want a super comfortable controller, too bad it's for the PC.  Get a thrustmaster firestorm dual.
What thrustmaster doesn't show you real well is this controller is a decent size, easy to handle.  Plus there's those extra buttons where your ring fingers sit.  Means more buttons to access while keeping your thumbs on the dual analog.

That's why I don't like the gamecube or xbox controller.  You need the extra shoulder buttons to make fps type games not so clunky.

As far as consoles go, the Xbox controller is by far the best one, and that is especially for FPS's.

The dual shock setup keeps the analog sticks in an afterthought position that is NOT at all comfortable for prolonged use.

That being said... The addition of extra shoulder buttons will be most welcome on the Xbox 360, but that was a very minor gripe about the Xbox controller this gen, as far as its usefulness in FPS's go.

I have not seen the Thrustmaster controller you mention, but one controller I found to be extremely nice for FPS's was the FPS Master from Gamester. Its build quality was crappy, its sticks were a bit too loose, but in concept the design is flawless for the genre it was made for. If it hadn't been for the 2 flaws I mentioned, then it would have indeed been a perfect controller for console FPS games.

I've had only limited success with 3rd party controllers, too. Maybe it's just a matter of being used to it, but I like Playstation controllers. They remind me of Super NES controllers with shoulder buttons. Since I went from a SNES straight to a Playstation, I appreciate the similarities. Plus I don't play most of the fancy shmancy games that actually require analog.
