Getting married has it benefits
« on: August 10, 2005, 10:20:59 am »
Looks like I won't be needing to borrow any of my dad's tools for my next cabinet.  I registered for lots of tools and surprisingly, I got almost all of them.  Now it's time to use these tools and put up some drywall in the basement and turn it into my home theater.

New tools include:
Mitre saw (w/laser)
Dremel
Belt sander (got 2, need to return one)
2 19.2V cordless drills
socket set
wrenches
screwdrivers
jigsaw
circular saw (w/laser)
and some cheap sawhorses

Edit:  I almost forgot, the most important tool for creating an arcade cabinet, a new router!

I'm guessing you're not married, those benefits decrease exponentially after that ring is on the finger...

That's teh only reason to get married IMO. We got enough cash after the wedding to put a very healthy down payment on a house.

We already got the house, but we got enough cash to pay for the honeymoon, some new living room furniture, and new blinds in the house.  It's a real pain the butt to plan a wedding for almost 300 people, but you get lots of loot :)

You're actually involved in that? I just let the wife & mother in law go crazy and tried to remember to say "yes dear" when prompted. Only thing I had to do was show up.

We were engaged for about a year and a half, she moved in with me (job transfer) 3 months before the wedding.  The first 15 months while she still lived with her parent's was a piece of cake.  Once she moved in, everyday after work I got bombarded with how much we have to do and how little time we have.  I typically just sat next to her on the couch while she filled out spread sheets and figured out seating charts.  I got the booze and DJ done months ago, so "my part" was techinically done, I just had to remind her that everything will get done and if it doesn't, big deal.

Not with me...One of my conditions, before I'll marry my lady...is there must be no change in the "frequency" and/or "enthusiasm" for said benefit. Think of it as a "nookie pre-nup." I'm out tha' door if anything changes, and she knows it! lol.  She can have half of my sh!t...it ain't worth the cold showers.   8)

Yeah, that'll work.

I'm happily married, and my wife and I don't take s*it from each other.   I make decisions, buy stuff, etc.  If she tells me no, I tell her tough.  Same to me.

You, sir, are naive if you think that anything a woman agrees to before a marriage actually means anything to them after marriage.

BUT, this isn't a suprise to me, since I've read your political posts.

I guess I'm naive enough to have flourished in a 14 year relationship with her. I was mostly joking. Mostly. *tucks away phone number for "escort service"*

Escort service?  What's that?

There was a time in my life that I used to tear the "E" section of the phonebook in whatever hotel I was staying at.  Saved a lot of $ later on in the night when I got back after a couple drinks.

I was young and stupid back then, not old and smart like I am now.

"I am so smart.  S-M-R-T.  I mean S-M-A-R-T!"

BTW, 14 year relationship?  Are you shacking up?  Neither of you wants to get married?  That's nice.

Finally, nothing can ruin a good marriage like kids.   ;D

We've always had this, "Marriage? Why ruin a good friendship" approach. There has been, up until this point, no real need to get married. We know we're not going anywhere without each other. I guess I've postponed it longer than she has, since I kinda' enjoy the "renegade" status it imbues us with amongst our aging friends. Most are married now, with kids, and even though I see how much they enjoy their families, they pine for the days when they could do pretty much what-ever-the hell they wanted. Like me. They'll be crushed when we get "hitched", as it will hasten the twilight of our already dwindling youth. lol. We're kinda' like the last ones still bucking the system...

Anyhow, we've lived together for about 7 years now, so we're basically married, just without the papers. We're both grew up under horribly destructive marriages, so the whole "institution" had kinda' soured for us (I didn't become a curmudgeon all on my own, ya know). Lately however, we've been thinking of making it legal anyhow, for the obvious financial/societal benefits.

Unlike the author of this topic, both our families are flat-broke so we ain't gettin' squat when we're married.

The "kids thing" is a whole 'nother issue. I love kids, but I'm not sure I want any. I certainly don't *need* any, so until a greater justification comes along...we'll be debating that one. I'm more prone to just adopting, since they're so many children without parents already...but she wants *my* baby. I am irresistible that way!  :)

I love my kids.  Wouldn't send 'em back.  Also wouldn't have anymore.  ;)

But, my wife and I used to have SO much fun before they came around.

That can be surprising.  You want MY baby?  But, uh, why?  What do you love me or something?   ::)

I really don't want my new saw to get dirty (unless it's saw dust) :)

Besides, I had to leave the great state of WI after graduation.  So now I guess my name should be changed to drunk@home in MN.

Here's a joke one of my friends told me...

What is the only food proven to lower a woman's sex drive?

........................wedding cake.

Back on topic.
My father inlaw uses me as an excuse to buy new tools for himself then he gives me his old ones.

That depends on your mother in law being a somewhat reasonable person.  My mother in law went psychotically selfish, doing things ranging from cutting half my family off the guest list without telling anyone to demanding that her sons be my ushers to then demanding that only two of them be ushers, excluding the youngest, who is handicapped, because she did not want to be watched walking down the aisle with him.  By the time the wedding took place, so much damage had been done to relations in her family and between hers and mine that my wife refused to get the wedding photos or video (that were paid for) and speaks of the wedding as if it were something best left forgotten.

Guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I get along fine with my mother-in-law and with most of the rest of my in-laws for that matter. It's my side of the family that drive us up the friggin' wall.

Funny thing is that I've now been married 2 weeks and absolutely nothing has changed.  Granted after we go to the social security office today she'll be Mrs. Drunkat@UW, but otherwise, she still does my laundry, still cooks me dinner, and still nags me about cleaning the house every day.

Although I'm sure you guys/girls which have been married much longer will tell me how things change with time :)

As the years go by, you actually voluntarily forfeit them.  It's a slowly eroding line of what you are satisfied with because so much less is offered that if you don't lower your standards you will notice just how much less life there is anymore.

Oh don't listen to those old grumps. ;)

I've been married for ten years and I'd have to say that things are probably better between my wife and I now than they were at the beginning. There's a lot to be said for living with someone who understands you completely.

You know, as a young man yet to be married, it is good to hear this ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- from time to time.  I hear the bitter folk, *cough* CWT *cough* and it just depresses me.  Its good to hear that there is hope for life after marriage.

Sure, there is life... you take the lowest common denominators from each of your lives, eliminate everything else, and that is your life.

WARNING

Watch those plastic sawhorses.  My wife bought me two of them and I had one full piece of MDF between the two with another cut piece on top and they collapsed.

I saw the legs bending (cheap) and I went in to tell my wife that I'd need to buy better saw horses and then we heard a load crash from the garage.

The legs split into a bunch of broken plastic bits
