Sound like a drunk....looks too pale ?!?!
« on: August 08, 2005, 04:51:47 pm »
OK, building my Mame cab, here's the config so far:

Celeron 333Mhz CPU
Gigabyte GA-6EA mobo
30 GB IBM DTLA307030 HD
ATI Rage II +DVD chipset videocard (PCI)
Compaq soundcard (Ensoniq chipset 1373)

Since using a quite slow PC and using a real arcade monitor, i run DOS and AdvanceMame with Advancemenu from the Easycab install CD ( http://www.msu.edu/user/jonesdes/easycab.htm )

Now when playing games (especialy the relatively more recent ones) I can hear the sound is speeding up and slowing down like a whining old record when things move on the screen. Is this pure processing power I'm missing or something else ?

Also all the colors seem to be wrong in lots of games. Like there's only 4 colors when you know it's more.

And often my video seems to invert, so the black part is white etc. when restarting the game, sometimes it's ok, sometimes not...

OK, lots of questions, but since it's all one set-up I figured I'd ask them in one thread :S

with the sound problem, does the computer use onboard sound or a soundcard? if it uses onboard sound that could be the problem as the CPU has to process the sound with that.

as for the colours being wrong.....hmm could be a graphics card driver problem

Uhm in my list I do mention the soundcard:

Compaq soundcard (Ensoniq chipset 1373)

There's no on-board sound.

There can't be a video driver problem either, running it in DOS :)

But thanks anyway :)

What sound driver are you using?
You should probably using the Allegro/Ensoniq Soundscape or Seal/Ensoniq Soundscape driver.

Open up your advmame.rc file and try changing the device_sound line to read:
device_sound allegro/ess
or
device_sound seal/ess

Well I actualy used the EasyCab installation CD:

http://www.msu.edu/user/jonesdes/easycab.htm

And chose the Ensoniq driver. The card tested OK. The 1373 is an Ensoniq chip so this should be right.

What I now am thinking of: the list of EasyCab indicated that it supports ATI (Rage 128 or later). My videocard is an ATI Rage II +DVD (as printed on the chip)....my fear is that this is older then a Rage 128 ?

Mmmm, maybe the videocard is not the best to use:
