Opinions on PIXEL TOUCH kiosk monitors?
« on: August 04, 2005, 01:14:25 am »
Anyone ever heard of "Pixel Touch" kiosk monitors? I found one and it has a VGA style port on the back, plus 5 big metal connectors, that look like they might be RGB + Sync + ground. I'm not sure though since those inputs are not labelled.

It's 21". I Googled and best I could come up with is that it is MAYBE made by a company called KDS.

Anyone have any experience with these? Is it in fact a touch-screen monitor? Is the picture more like a TV or like a multisync computer monitor?

NO MORE!!

I'm guessing the "5 big metal connectors" are BNC connectors.

Quote
BNC Connectors: Some high-performance monitors use special coaxial cable that has a standard 15-pin connector for the video card on one end, but breaks out to separate wires with BNC connectors on them for the monitor. There are usually 5 wires, one for each of red, green, blue, horizontal sync and vertical sync. Some monitors that have BNC connectors on them also have a standard 15-pin VGA, and either can be used. The BNC cable can be expensive, but provides better shielding from noise and interference than the standard VGA cable. It is found much more often on larger, more expensive units.

yeah i was curious as to what the BNC connectors on the back of my monitor was for.  not to hijack this post, but does BNC offer supior picture quality compared to vga?

And as for the touch screen.  I'm assuming you have the ones I have.  They don't have a touch screen... or at least the ones being sold on ebay and a few other companies don't have them.

btw, I think they are GREAT for normal computer use.  I have two next to each other for dual monitor on my development machine.  I LOVE having two of the same monitors.  And everyone asks about my big metal boxes.  Heck, most ask if I built them myself??

They aren't the best for an arcade monitor.  They are SVGA monitor with good stats.  handle fast refreshes and look good.  But no 15hz.  Not bad for the price.  But I would rather have a 200 19" true arcade monitor then a 21" SVGA

I have one of these that I'm going to put in my cab.  Not a true arcade monitor but I couldn't find a better screen acerage per dollar ratio.  Mine has a bit of screen burn (only noticeable when the screen is a uniform light color) and needs to have the guns aligned a hair, but not so much that I'm going to mess with it.

It weights a ton and the metal case give one the impression it was designed for the Soviet military.

The one I bought is the non-touch screen version.

If you're buying a used one, I'd try and pick it up in person and have them hook it up to something before you head out the door.  Mine was OK, but I get the impression they had some that were deep in the unacceptable catagory.

This one is in a used goods store for $15. I don't think they have the means to test it on site.

So I should pick it up?  :)

I got mine a year ago for 50 bucks shipped to my door.  And I think they where REALLY worth it.  I don't believe you can get them at this price anymore...  I find that you can get them SUPER cheap... but with shipping that goes up considerably.

So if its working its a good deal.    But you might be buying something for 15 bucks so you can move the 80lbs sucker to your house to find its dead...

but remember, the power switch is hidden (on the left side in one of the vent holes).  So the person before might not have figured out how to turn it on.

Its a gamble.

RayB, $15 for one is one heck of a deal! It's what I use in my arcade machine and I'm extremely pleased with it. It is one heavy mo-fo, be warned!

Yep, the power switch is hidden inside of the metal case, so the people selling prolly don't know how to turn on the power.

I have one. It works great.

$15 is three trips to McD's... It's worth that just for the bragging rights if it works!

Thanks for the great reading. I Googled alot and couldn't find much about the monitor. Didn't occur to me it could have been discussed on THIS board!

Oh and I did the math wrong. It's about$10.00us.

I really like mine.  Paid a lot more than $15 for it, too.
