Philips Arcade Monitor, Win XP, Geforce 3?
« on: December 28, 2002, 10:36:59 pm »
I orginally started out thinking I was going to mount a 17" PC monitor in my cab.  After reading up, I felt this would be to small and not arcade like.  I was considering buying a TV with S-vid in for my cabinet project.  I really wanted windows support, and the TV seemed the best way to go.  Then I found that I could use a "hybrid" monitor to have the arcade look with windows, however this would cost me some $$$.    I researched a little more and found that many people are running windows on an arcade monitor. :o

I am wondering if I can run windows on my arcade monitor that came with my cab.  It is labeled on the back "Philips 19VKUP22, Serial No. 345613.  It has red, green, blue, yellow, and black wires, as well as 2 black wires connected that I am assuming is the power cord.  The monitor is 20" diagonal, about 16" X 11".  My question is, what is the easiest way to interface this monitor to my PC using windows? ??? ??? ???  My comp has a 64 MB AGP geforce 3 Ti200 card with TV out.  (I've heard Nvidia isn't so hot with TV out).

I've read a little about powerstrip, arcadeOS, advanceMAME, advanceMENU, Jpac, and even Andy's new video card (which may be my solution.  I trust Ultimarc for quality and service as I love his IPAC!).  Sorry if this question has been answered long ago, but purhaps someone has new information.  I'm really looking for the easiest way to run windows XP on my arcade monitor from someone who has experience.  And if I'm not mistaken, BYOAC'ers have experience in this field!  If you could explain how you did something similiar, please post. :)

Thanks in advance for any response!!!  You guys have been nothing but help in my MAME project! :D

for now you wait till andy comes out with the card and use arcadeos for the time being.

if you REALLY need to play games right now then you can look for some scan converter(if you cant wait that is).

I use one and results are pretty good however it used to work really nice now its blinkin/rolling a little.SO i gotta get a new one :-\.
I paid next to nothing for the one i have so WHATEVER !.

One question: when is this beast coming out???  I heard January on Ultimarc's message board-but it wasn't posted by Andy himself.

Another question:  Can I use ArcadeOS on Windows XP as there is no real DOS?

Update:
I was told that my monitor is a Wells Gardner 19K4675.  Philips is just the tube manufacturer.  Another question however: how should I connect the power to the monitor? ???  I don't want to fry the thing (or myself!)  :o
As for ArcadeOS in XP: should I repartition my hard drive and run Fraggles boot CD on a DOS, FAT32 partition?

Thanks for any help!!! :D

someone else will have to confirm/deny, but i've been told that most arcade monitors *need* power to pass through an isolation transformer (large apple/ small cabbage size thing at the bottom of arcade cabs) in order to not turn into a boat anchor..so don't plug it in just yet.. until someone else chimes in about your model.. :)

my Cab came with a regular lamp style plug to the monitor, and I was sorely tempted to try it out.. glad I didn't tho..:-)
Pull a year and a half strike- it's over 4eva..
besides, WHL rocks!

The cab does have a power supply...but I'm not sure if I should trust it with just the monitor plugged in.  Can anyone give me advise on powering the monitor?

With a GF3 you shouldn't need a scan converter at all to give it an input signal.  Using Powerstrip you can set the output frequency all the way down to 15khz.

As far as the power connector goes, if there's a power supply already in the cabinet, it should work fine to get the monitor going.  Unless it was broken to start with.  ;)

Yeah, the power supply works, and it has one of those isolation transformer things (the large wire coil thing that's fairly weightly).  But I've heard bad things about connecting a monitor without the original PCB connected causing it to have a zero load.  Is this true?  If so, should I just leave the PCB in there?  Or connect a light bulb or something to take this "load"?

As for powerstrip- can I set it up so it works at bootup?  I don't want the bootup screen to mess up my monitor, or the windows xp startup screen, or windows itself.  I haven't read too much into powerstrip, could someone lead me in the right direction as to how to set it up to work directly to an arcade monitor running XP?  THANKS!!!!!!!!
