vertical hold adjustment dial broken, Electrohome GO7-CBO 19"
« on: December 28, 2002, 03:12:53 pm »
I was running advcfg and fiddling with the veritcal hold adjustment dial when all of a sudden it flew apart. Here's a pic of working control dials (thank you Mr. Salty):

The vertical hold dial is on the far left. The post is still intack. I was left holding two pieces in my hand, the rear disk, and the front adjustment dial.

The part on at the top of the image goes on the rear of the control post, the part on the bottom of the image goes on the front, through the post, and has two prongs that should be bent over onto the disc in the rear of the post..

Does anyone have any tips before I attempt to 'fix' this? I'm not sure how these dials physically work, so I though I'd ask before I simply slap it back together and hope for the best. Thanks.

The round disk shown on top with the small detent at about 10 oclock is the wiper of the variable resistor or pot (potentiometer).  It is usually connected to the center leg of the device  probably with tension provided from the other piece when it fits together with its tabs.  The dimpled part that looks like it is facing down would face the body of the resistor an wipe along the carbon film on the phenolic body of the pot.

Unless you can find something to hold the pot together it will not function properly.   You could replace the pot this would take a bit of desoldering and soldering.  The worst thing is trying to get at the circuit board to do the work without electricuting yourself or breaking something else.  You might find a similar pot and use a piece from it to replace the portion of your pot that has worn out or broken off.  I assume that this would be the smaller disk that is located on the front.

A bailing wire type fix might be to replace the pot with a pot of the same value but soldered to the legs of the exiting pot if you were to snip if out leaving the only the legs in place.  You could solder wire to these legs and solder them to a new pot if you cannot solder the pot directly to the legs.

If the pot is R422 vertical hold then the schematic that I have of the G07 chassis shows it as a 10 K variable resistor.

Just some suggestions.

Thank you very much BobA. The tabs on the smaller disk seem to be what hold the potentiometer together. The tabs still seem to be intact, so I'm going to attempt to piece it all back together.

If this fails, I'll try the bailing wire type fix you proposed. A very good idea indeed. Thanks again.

Fixed.  ;D

I ended up buying an old non working chassis on ebay for $10 and replaced the faulty pot. Works like a champ.
