Connecting Console Controllers 2 a PC...
« on: July 21, 2005, 08:47:12 am »
Ladies Ladies Ladies!!!!!

I have Connected 2 NES controllers to my paralell and USB (for Power) ports.  Now,  you can connect 4 maybe 5 NES & SNES controllers to the paralell port and it will run no problem.  What I am wondering is, is it possible to connect 4 Sega controllers to the parallel port? I want to be able to connect 4 controllers so I can have a full game of NBA Jam.

Please send any suggestions!

Philip

Not sure, but I would first see whether your chosen emulator supports 4 pads...and also see how NBA Jam handled 4 pads (did it have extra ports on the cartridge?).

1st I was gonna go USB but its so much cheaper going paralell.  A Lot Cheaper and easier. (like its that much easier)
2nd Many Emulators allow 4 controllers even for NES.  NBA Jam Does work with 4 controllers perfectly.
I have seen the schematic for 4/5 nes andsnes but have only seen 1 Atari and Sega.  I want atleast 2 controllers, hopefully 4...lalala I got a atari 2600 controller for 25 cents today, in great condition at a garage sale.

You can do 2 Atari (or Master System, maybe not Genesis) to the gameport. I've seen a couple of different sites that have full schematic & instructions...

You should be able to do it through parallel as well, haven't looked into that myself.

if you dont mind hacking your pads apart its not hard to hook up quite a few to the keyboard port

but (if like me) you still want your pads to be usable on a megadrive then im as stuck as you, i only have 2 paralell ports and one of those is hooked up to a printer

i was thinking about using a usb to parallel adaptor but those only work on printers, which only leaves using a usb to serial adaptor and then using a serial to parallel adaptor, which isnt the most elegent of answers

Why not go all usb.  The retrozone kits can supposedly be used after they connect to there appropriate connector.  so use regular controller.  make a box that has the nes, sega, snes connection on it.  turn it to usb and then run that to the computer.

The impression I got from their site is that the chips are different for the different controllers (well... I think NES & SNES use the same communications). So if you're building a NES/SNES/SEGA to USB then you would need 2 or 3 chips & a USB hub...

Check out this hack, it lets you wire it right to your keyboard encoder. (NES and 3 button genesis)  You can change out the wire on the controller or get your own connector.

Yes but that involves hacking your pads & making them unusable on the original.
If it let you plug unmodified controllers straight in, I'd be impressed.

if you want an unmodified controller you will probably need to buy one of the usb converters..

I would either go USB or hack the controllers so you can use a keyboard encoder.
