Isolating Transformer problem..
« on: December 23, 2002, 04:07:38 pm »
I recently purchased an XMEN: Children of the Atom arcade machine at a local auction (it's actually a converted WWF wrestling arcade).

It has a Wells Gardner 7000 series 25" monitor.  I'm in the process of converting it to a mame cabinet.  I've come across some info on the web on how to get the power to the monitor without using the original power supply (fuse -> power filter -> isolating transformer -> monitor) since I will not be using the JAMMA board and don't want to just fry a good power supply with 0 load on it.

The problem I ran into is that the original isolating transformer has 2 outputs (0V and 110V 60hz) but 3 inputs! (0V, 110V 60hz, and E)  What the heck is "E" ?!?

And will any isolating transformer with just 2 inputs / 2 outputs work great as a replacement?

Thanks,

JoeB

::)  You need an Isolating Transformer! Download and read the WG-K7000 manual. http://www.mikesarcade.com/arcade/monitors.html
Has Wells-Gardner manuals. You can skip the power supply, but not the Isolation Transformer. If you do you will be lucky to just ruin your monitor, Before it Electricutes You  :(   The "E" wire means Earth as in grounded outlet with the top center pin actually making a connection to the ground rod of your home wiring.

What I did on my NBA Jam, was leave the power supply alone (it still powers the monitor and boards so no load problem).  I then have my setup run directly to the monitor and I replaced the control panel with my own wired controls.  Its perfect as when the original bpards powers up, you need to press a button to get past the diag screen, so there is no sound out the speakers (since the jamma control panel is disconnected).  I then wired my sound to the sound board (soldered to some undocumetned auxilary input points) and got sound working without having to add anything!
