mame32 on XP problems...
« on: July 19, 2005, 01:13:23 pm »
Hey, I tried searching on the Mame32 forums (but they don't have search I could find) and on these forums, but I can't find an answer to this.  I recently got an old PIII 600MGhz machine from my brother in law.  It has WinXP and 256MB of RAM installed.  I just stuck Mame32 on it to get it going really fast and it doesn't seem to work quite right.

The first problem I had was when I had the "Open in same window" box checked in the options, it would load the game in the main window (so it was maximized), but it would show the title bar at the top still with "Mame32" listed in it.  I would have hit alt+enter to get it to be a window running in xp and then hit alt+enter again to maximize it to get that title bar to go away.

Also, when I had that option checked, it would load the game but all of the colors would be screwed up.  After playing with the options and finally uncehcking that box so that it now opened in a new window, the colors would be correct, but it would open in an xp window, not full screen (so I would still have to press alt+enter to get it to go full screen).

Has anyone ever had this same problem?  Does anyone know what may be causing this?  Any help is appreciated in advance.

Which version of mame32 you are using ? I am assuming that you are using an official mame32 from www.mame.net

(mame.ini) keep throttle to 1.

throttle                1

(mame.ini)
ddraw           1
hwstretch     1
resolution     1024x768x32   (match with your monitor Resolution)

delete your "mame.ini" file for default mame32 settings.

I started using the latest mame32 from the classicgaming.com mame32 site, but it was way too slow on the PIII, so I got an older version of mame32 (I think it's .87 or .88, I can check when I get home).  It runs the games much better (had a little slowdown in super street fighter 2, but it was still playable).

I have been running Mame32 .86 for over a year (yes, too lazy to update) in XP without any problems on a laptop.

I went home last night and searched for the mame.ini file, and it wasn't there.  I figured mame.ini is for actual mame, while mame32 must save those settings elsewhere.

At any rate, I figured that the ddraw setting you mentioned above must be DirectDraw, so I went into the "Properties" menu on mame32 and started playing with the direct draw checkboxes (they have a bunch of different options).  I forget off the top of my head what I finally checked and unchecked, but it's now running great (just had to play with those settings).

Strange that it was goofing with the colors of the games, don't understand what I did, just know that it's now working fine.  I was originally going to put UltraStyle on that machine (even downloaded it and tried configuring it, but it kept giving me errors).  I like mame32, and it has always just worked in the past so I wasn't sure what it could've been.

Thanks for your help, without your post above, I would never have thought to mess with the DirectDraw settings etc...
