9 Songs
« on: July 18, 2005, 08:54:06 am »

anyone seen this movie? ive just come out of the theater and had already composed most of this review before the movie finished! what can i say? 9 Songs is no 9 1/2 weeks! you would think a movie that has sex, drugs and rock and roll would keep your attention but i found for the first time ever i was looking at my watch. Even at 69 minutes it was too long! While i was surprised at how explicit it was in parts (especially when the girl fellates the guy) even the scene featuring the excellent Dandy Warhols half way through couldn't pull this movie along. This goes to show that implied sex in a movie can be much more effective. Sex here was just used to attract attention i think. An earlier 'risque' movie from France, Baise Moi received rave reviews for its candid use of explicitedness but this movie doesn't compare. The critics got it the wrong way around with Baise Moi though. Instead of being a truimph of main stream cinema using explicit sex in the plot, rather I think it was a triumph of porn cinema utilising story and plot within its framework! 9 Songs however is neither. There's no plot to speak of, it's not porn and the music part of it wasn't hot either. I like movies to entertain me, or at least inform me of something. Next time i feel like being bored witless in a cinema, i'll go to an Ingmar Bergman festival!
The director was responsible for the critically acclaimed '24 hour party people' which i missed out on. After seeing 9 songs i don't think i'll ever get around to seeing it.
9 songs gets 1 star for trying! If you want to see an entertaining movie with sex, drugs and rock and roll, i recommend 'Boogie Nights'.
