How fast can you beat Super Mario Brothers?
« on: July 16, 2005, 01:53:17 am »
Okay, I thought I was good at this game.  I used to beat the game fast.  I was talking to a friend and told him I thought I was better than most of the people who say they are good.  Then, my friend tells me he saw online where some guy beat it in 4 minutes and 13 seconds, but he can't find it now.  I simply don't believe him.  So I tried the game and I beat it in 7 minutes 19 seconds.  I know there was some room for improvement in my game in several places, but I just can't see where the guy could shave off 3 minutes.  Can/could any of you guys have crushed my 7:19?  Or do you know of the real record?  I could see someone getting in under 6 maybe, but the game takes a while to run through things on it's own.

When i was younger and actually played more, i could do the entire game with a single man and grabbing no power ups.. was about 5 or 6 min..

7 min IS a great run man.. but yes, theres a few vids of people speed running it..

Yeah those speedruns are pretty cool to watch but there is no way you could do the same using actual hardware. Almost all the speed runs are done via emulation and then they play each level untill they get it perfect, then splice it together to make it look like they beat the whole game. Now i know that this isn't how all speedruns are done but i know thats how mario bros was done. Be sure to check out the super mario bros 3 speedrun its pretty rad.

Dude that site is awsome.

I thought my 1:16 at super metroid was decent.  WRONG!!!

And Zelda in under 30 minutes seems crazy.

The SMB could be done if it's not real for some reason.  I just didn't realize how much time a few of the things I was doing took.  Still 7:19 having taken 15 years off is pretty good.

Those games are played on an emulator in slow-motion then played back in fast motion. That's why every move is perfect.

The Zelda I watched seemed like something was up.  At times the guy was swording in two directions at once and he was either using slow motion or some type of turbo fire, either way it's cheating to me.   He also switched weapons too fast to be real time.  The weapons page wouldn't even fully load.  It still shows what can be done either way and a lot of th stuff would be pretty tough to pull of even in slow motion.

SB - I googled and can't find the speedrun site you speak of.  The best one I found was the one you told me about.

Tool-assisted speed runs and information:
http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/
These runs seek to find the fastest posible way to beat any given game using emulation, frame-at-a-time playing, luck manipulation, glitches, savestates, and re-records. The fastest run of Super Mario Bros is 5:00.
If bisqwit doesn't have a video of a 4:13 run, then it isn't possible, no matter what tricks are used.

Real speedruns done on real hardware by human beings:
http://speeddemosarchive.com/
The current record for Super Mario Bros (as verified by Twin Galaxies) is 5:06 and is available at the site.

When I was like 11 I could beat that game in like 6 minutes.  I used to do it in the morning before school while my mother yelled at me to turn the damn thing off.

Can speedruns be used as in-game movies for a front-end??  ???
I think this might be a very cool addition to a cabinet, even when most files are pretty big, good thing that HD's are pretty cheap these days  ;D

You could probably convert it to mpeg and compress it down quite a bit.  There are only like 256 colors in a game like SMB so it would come down a lot, especially if you're going to display it in a tiny window in the FE.
