Ive had an '89 CRX for this past year and have absolutly loved it. My MOT was due this week (dont expect you over the pond'ers to understand this concept

Well, a few of us do, but I expect only those of us with an interest in importing cars from GB. I'm certanly glad that's something that we don't have to deal with here.

In any case, sorry to hear about the death of your loved one. ;)

Ah. Safety and emissions testing.

Quite a bit more elaborate than Texas' vehicle inspections(pain in the butt level more elaborate, in fact).

We test the lights, brakes, and wipers to make sure they all work, then test for emissions.

As I understand it, the MOT test can turn into an all day ordeal and they have no problem with failing a vehicle for minor violations.

Yah. I found a list of things they test.

Any violation is a failure here, but... there's not a lot to violate. IF your brake lights come on, your turn signals flash, your headlights both light up, your wipers move, you aren't belching black smoke out the tail pipe, and you have brake pads, you're getting your tag. Even if it's all gonna fail in 2 weeks.

We don't even have safety & emmissions test at all anymore. We used to, but everyone "knows a guy" who can get you a sticker. I guess the state got tired of trying to enforce it and did away with it altogether.

I was just looking, and Texas only does emissions tests in 3 areas.
Not coincidentally, they're the most heavily urbanized areas.


I know a guy who knows a guy. But he doesn't know a guy that can get me inspection stickers.

I'll bet it is fairly standard for most vehicles to fail MOT first time around, isn't it?

I guess there is an upside to draconian inspections like that, I'd imagine that it means used cars around there tend to be in a lot better repair than in other places.

I feel your pain.  I'm getting rid of my 67 Dodge Dart Sunday.  I haven't turned the engine over in two years, I have no place to put it, and I have too many time and money wasting hobbies as it is.

I've heard that in Japan, which has similarly massive inspections, it just means most people buy new cars.

Japan has at 3 and 5 years if I remember correctly, and its a total inspection, and its really expensive.

Over there, you dont repair cars that have being in an accident, if its more then a bumper or door swap out its generally written off as they have to repair to as good as new etc, so here in NZ we get loads of 3 and 5 year old cars come over, and accident damaged ones that people repair (often not very well) - its all good tho, a good car can be had for under NZ$3000 here with out looking.

Mission, was that just changed in the last few years?  I've never owned a car until this present model that was newer than '91, and I coulda swore they did an emissions check on the '91 car.

I believe 96' is the first year that every car has the computer hookup on it that can simply tell the computer at the testing place if the emissions equipment is functioning correctly or not.

In the areas of MO that have emmissions, more than 25 years old = pre-emissions.

My little brother is about to get rid of a CRX that runs great because it's nitrus oxide emissions are too high (he lives in San Francisco, where emissions standards are very strict).  He's pretty broken up about it.

Did he already try fixing on it?  I had the exact same problem with a van of mine and the fix was pretty easy.

He's also going to try to get a Utah registration claiming that he lives with me, but is temporarily working in California.  Hopefully that will work out for him.

Not saying I endorse it, but I have never had any problems registering vehicles at different addresses.

Probably easiest if he "sells" the car to you, and then you let him use it ALL THE TIME.

I have never seen anyone have any problems with that either. My friend Becky and her sister have both lived in Missouri for several years and their cars are still registered at their parents house in Wisconsin.
