What about "shotgun" games?
« on: July 12, 2005, 03:53:58 pm »
There is a guy that I work with that is interested in making a cabinet, but one of his desires is to play the games that use a shotgun style lightgun such as Big Game Hunter and some turkey hunting game.  Are these emulated yet?

Actually, I've seen them at Walmart, but that is about the same crowd some times. :)

A bit OT, but House of the Dead 3 also uses a shotgun...you can play this on Xbox (at least with a pistol style lightgun).

You can buy a Sammy Atomiswave (Sega DCish hardware) which has Extreme Hunting for that true Walmart redneck hunting experience.

Here's a case where an actual shotgun and some clay pigeons would actually be more enjoyable than the games.

Really?!  Damn, I just bought the Beretta copy gun (which I'm very happy with actually).

I just wanted to point out that hotd 3 is also available for the pc and actually runs better with more impressive graphics.  There are a ton of "hunter" games available for the pc as well.  Who buys them I don't know.

While I find killing a living creature for sport both offensive and immoral (and I'm from WV so I get a ton of crap for my views) and simulation of such an act extremely boring (You are shooting at something that doesn't shoot back, how dumb is that?) apparently somebody is buying them because a "______ Hunter" game comes out about every other season.  They are usually from the same developers of the arcade games too, so they are a fairly accurate port.  Some of the wild turkey games are fun though as it's more of a cartoon shooting gallery and humor is involved.

Regardless of my views, I'd rather see someone playing a sim than actually going out and killing the poor critters.  Of course if you are playing the sims AND hunting then you really need to step back and figure out why you like to kill defenseless creatures so much.  I mean if I killed every time the voices in my head told me to, the seas would run red with the blood of my enemies.   ;D

Anyway....

Considering you can now use psx2 guns on the pc and those crazy Japs have turned about every variant of the firearm into a lightgun for the playstation, it shouldn't be hard to find a shotgun or something similar.  Lik sang would be the place to start looking.

I didn't know...for these impressive graphics I bet you need an impressive 3d graphics card tho.  How do you reckon the (original) ArcadeVGA would fair?  The Xbox's graphics are pretty damn good anyway imo...

I've never played these 'real hunting' games, but I find most shooting games quite fun.  Remember nothing shoots back in Point Blank either but it's great fun.  FWIW I generally share your view on shooting real animals!

Yeah I haven't tried the Guncon2 thing yet...I lost track of whether anyone actually has them working right or not yet.  I'd like to have a go eventually....

It's scaleable, so while it won't look as nice you can run it on crappier cards.  My point though was then you could run it on your arcade cab.

Have you ever played those "______ hunter" games?  I played one of the deer hunter ones just for the heck of it.  Here is the gist.  You set and wait, and set and wait, and set and wait.  Then you see a deer.  If you hit it, it falls down dead, if not you scare it and it runs away.  That's literally it.   So basically it's like sniper mode in a fps without the fun.

I'm just saying... they really aren't worth the effort.

HOTD3 (PC version) still looks nice on an AVGA 7000 series. Doesn't look as good as the current run of cards, but does the job nicely in my cab.

I run it on my arcade cab already (xbox version) ;)  Works nice  ;D

I'd still like to check out the PC one tho, at some point...

Aah so you are the one guy that bought a console port of the game.

It's not worth it.  You pay for a set of lightguns on a system that's had two good lightgun games and at best might have three by the end of it's lifecycle.

On the other hand, thanks to digital lesiure, mame, and the cheapness of pc development, there will always be lightgun games on the pc.  Of course if you don't have a mame cab then it's equally stupid on a pc, but since we do I won't go there.

I have bought a lightgun game for a console since the Nes days.  and come to think of it, they only had about 4 lightgun games on the nes.  That's probably why the system came with the lightgun, because they knew nobody would actually pay money for one.  ;)

Of course you're right about lack of games, but HOTD3 is budget now and the gun was pretty cheap too (
