What's your average score for a round of golf?
« on: July 08, 2005, 07:48:42 pm »
Not score as in "dude, check this out!  I found a driver some guy pitched in the lake here!"

A normal par-70/71/72 course.

I'm headed off to play in a few minutes, just getting 9 in.  I'll shoot somwhere in the high 40's, but for 18, I'll shoot 100+

I have recently dropped down to between 95-100 since getting a driver that better fit my swing, and I've always been a lights-out putter.....it's those funny sticks with the metal heads that cause me consternation ;D

What a way to relax!

I play 9 holes once a week before work.  I'll usually shoot betwen 42 and 48, once in a while or if my swing gets out of whack I'll shoot in the low 50's.

When I go play 18 if it's a course I haven't played I usually do pretty bad (my opinion) and shoot around 100.  If it's a regular course in the 90's.  Haven't played 18 since last season though, newborns usually put a damper on that sort of thing.

I can hit all my clubs pretty well, just not during the same round.  ;)

Hey Drew,

First off - average score? Good night, after you send one club sailing into the fairway next to you (my first time ever golfing many years ago) what do you think? Seriously, no more than I get to play, I do good to get a 140 on 18.

Secondly, and FAR off topic...my wife just noticed your little saying about "setting a man on fire" and is still trying to pick herself up off the floor...she LOVED it!  ;D

I've been playing for a few years but not very often, have my own clubs etc. I'm usually pretty stoked to shoot under 95 and pretty pissed off to shoot over 105.

 >:(      >:(      >:(      >:(      >:(      >:(      >:(

I picked up a used Callaway C4 driver a week-ish ago.  I've got a pretty fast swing (swingspeed in the 115mph range, measured by a fitter), and I could beat this club like nobody's business.  I've NEVER, in all the years I've been "golfing", been able to hit a driver better than this club....EVER!

Yesterday, after heading back to Golf Galaxy, I was told I should have gotten a stiffer flex for that club.

Why, you might be asking, did I head back there, and why was I speaking to them about the club?

I BROKE THE FRIGGEN HEAD OFF OF IT RIGHT ABOVE THE HOSEL!

After some judicious applications of self-restraint to avoid punching the smarmy kid's grin right off his face who was amused he'd met someone who could break a club, I did a little 'net research.  This particular model of club has a history of doing this, particularly with harder-swinging guys.  Problem is, they don't MAKE this club loft in a stiffer flex.

Since I bought the club second-hand, it wasn't "registered" to me, otherwise, I could have sent it back and Callaway would have replaced it, likely with a brand-new model club - FREE of charge.  As I'm not a fanatic of paying for one club what an entirely new set of irons cost, I'm NEVER going to be the guy buying a new model of driver from ANYONE, regardless of how well I hit it.  $400+ is SILLY to pay for ONE club.  That club cost me $85, and I got THREE rounds out of it, and yesterday's half-round.

To help with global-warming issues, I soothed my pain by throwing the clubhead into the blazing fire we had going.  The soleplate took FOREVER to melt!

I bought a new/used replacement.  Stiffer flex, less loft (9o instead of 11o), horrible Callaway original grip.....I hit this one ok, nowhere near the same length.  I lost ~25 yards EASY by dropping the loft.  I like it better than any other previous driver I've owned, but I HATE it in comparison to how well I hit my higher-lofted model that broke.

I stopped keeping score after it broke.  I was up and down, but I was even par through 5.  My game DID go to hell after that.

I used to golf when I was in college.  I was good at first, shooting in the low 90s from day 1.  The only time I had to play was midday during the week.  Apparently I wasn't good enough for the old geezers I always got grouped with, because they would always ---smurfette--- at me the whole time that I was holding them up or simply not up to standards.  Sorry gramps, I've been playing for two months and I'm 8 shots off your average.  I was improving rapidly when I just gave up because I was sick of paying $40 to get yelled at by Grampa Simpson for two and a half hours.  It wasn't relaxing, by the 8th hole I was walking around like Happy Gilmore with Bob Barker taunting him.

I used to drive lefty and hit short righty, and that was what got me yelled at more than anything else.  Apparently being ambidextrous breaks some unwritten golf tenets of being crotchety.

Sorry guys, but I have an 8 handicap and have actually shot sub par for a round. I have a Cobra 430SS driver, Titlest Blade Irons, Taylor made Rescue Clubs, Cleveland wedges and a Ping putter.

I also spent 3 summers in my youth teaching golf at a kids summer camp in Maine.

BTW I love golf in the US as it has no dress code unlike here in the UK.

I used to shoot a fairly good round of golf.  I'm finding that the older I get the worse my game is.  The clubs seem to be shorter, the pencil supplied is always dull and no eraser.  The worse part is the Wind Mill!  It always screws me up ;D
Please!  Give me the good news first!

No need to be sorry.  I wish I could play that well.  Where have you gone that has no dress code, as even the muni courses around me have at least a minimum requirement of a collared shirt, and I've played courses that dictated what type of shorts (if they were to be worn) you could wear.

I'll shoot around a 68 or 69.

Then I'll move on to the second hole.

I played quite a few course out in the US most of them around the Maine, New Hampshire border and only one in North Conway had a dress code which was only a collared shirt. We also played a few others on our travels and in the main we got away with shorts and a collared shirt.

At my own club here in England the dress code is:-
No jeans
No T-shirts
No tracksuit tops
Tailored shorts
No football shirts
The rules apply in the clubhouse where you can't wear trainers or baseball caps either.

This is not unusual for the UK, in fact my wife once came for a walk and was told her top was 'inappropriate'.

Sadly in my college years, I've played places which don't enforce a dress code.  Playing in Jeans, T-shirts, T-shirts with holes in them, sneakers, etc. After wearing all that, I had the nerve to look down on people who wore flip-flops.  I've played in DC, MD, VA, and NC.  I should of played in Hawaii when I had the chance.  It was the week after the PGA Grand Slam tournament and I was staying at that hotel.

Drew, Please tell me you at least tried calling Callaway.  I called Taylor Made for my 4-wood and they never asked about registration.  They just told me the local shop to drop it off.

On a normal 18 I shoot anywhere from 90 to 110.. It really depends on how hung over I am and how much beer Im drinking at the moment.

I never told them it wasn't originally purchased by me, they pointed it out to me.  Don't know, how, but I'm guessing the original owner had registered it, and they had to call it in for some reason.  They gave me an address and asked me "is this still your correct address", and I had to let them know.

They gave me 20% off on the other one I bought, but still.... :-\

Callaway obviously realized the error of their ways, because this model was supposedly only made for a single year.  What I can't understand is WHY make a club that can't be reshafted AT ALL?  That was the reason it had to be sent back to Callaway, otherwise I would have just gotten it reshafted, but the design didn't allow it.  Even if I hadn't broken it, I couldn't reshaft it.  I e-mailed them telling them some of my story (leaving out the "I didn't purchase it for hundreds of dollars" part) and how unsatisfied I was with the 9o and their response was to take it to my local shop and have them send it back for replacement with a new club.  I'm gonna do so today and hope that one isn't registered to anyone so I can swap 'em out.  I LOVE Callaway clubs, and only wish I could afford a set of their irons.  I've played a buddy's set, and they're the easiest-to-hit set of clubs I've ever tried!  The newer sets are kinda fugly, but the older ones, like the X14's, while still fugly, don't seem to look like extra "stuff" was slapped on for appearance's sake.

I'm getting a Golfsmith catalog sent to me, and I'm gonna make one of their XTC drivers (I made my current putter and previously a 3-wood I broke as well, and a 5 iron....fun stuff - I considered setting up a little side business at one time) over the winter....mebbe make a set of smaller woods as well if that works out.  My Adams 3 & 5 woods get used more around the green than anywhere else.  :P  After getting a mini-fitting, I know a LOT better what I should be playing.  If the Ping trailer comes around my area again, I'm gonna stop by there for a complete fitting.

Drew,

I'm not sure if Callaway has changed something, but I had the same thing happen to my Biggest Big Bertha (that's my fav club of all time) .  the original shaft that came with it was notorious for breaking right above the hosel.  While it wasn't registered to me (some guy I was playing one round broke the shaft and threw it in the trash! I asked him if I could grab it and he was cool with it), I took it to a reputable dealer, Edwin Watts here in Dallas,  and they said "no prob" and fixed it for free...TWICE. of course with the same cruddy shaft though.

third time I had them re-shaft it with a UST Pro-Force Gold and it's never had a problem since.  of course I had to pay for that.

I'd reccomend dropping that stock shaft and getting a custom shaft done to it to fit your swing, loft, flight pattern..etc.  I used to "worm burn" with the original shaft, now I can hit those nice shots that bore through the air...well most of them looked like that.

In my old job where I played 1-2 times a week, plus weekends....I was an 8 handicap  ;D

In my current job and the new kid situation where I play 1-2 times a YEAR.....well let's just say breaking a 100 is a good day for me.  :-[

Yeah, I've got the GBB with Warbird sole that I liked (had it given to me).  I reshafted with probably the exact same shaft you're talking about (purple/yellow?) and it's nice, but long ago I got suckered into the "less degrees of loft will equate to longer drives".  I use that old club as my "gotta keep it on the fairway" club, but with a higher loft, I and many others willing to try it, I can outdrive my "favorite" club and not really even lose that much in accuracy.  I've found 10.5o-11o is just about ideal for me.

I've actually heard of Edwin Watts!  Dunno if they've got an online store, but that name I've heard of several times, and I can't place where.  They've got a Nevada Bob's around me, but I just don't dig their service AT ALL, and Golf Galaxy offers me that.  I've got to grab a driver and beat those over-eager people away from trying to help me sometimes, so I'm guessing they're not trying to hose me or anything.  Other than this, (which doesn't seem to be their fault in any way) it's been what I would consider one of the MOST customer-friendly stores I've ever been in other than Nordstrom's, and that counts for a lot in my book.

Is your GBB the one with the blue trim?  I'd wanted to give 'em a shot, but they were priced out of what-I-wanted-to-pay range until recently.  I only paid more for my C4 because of the head material.  I'm gonna take a few pokes with the ERC Fusion today, since I'm going....and then pray it comes down from $300 USED! :o

I got 78 over 9 holes and lost 3 balls on my first game. Then I stopped playing.
Now in a tasty new flavour.

Bets bit of golf rage I ever saw was when a friend threw his club after duffing a tee shot, we had to let the group behind through while he climbed a tree to get it back. ;D ;D ;D

Buddy did a "Tin Cup" and plunked several shots in the water (several different ways, skulled, skied, skipped, shorted).  Driving him around the pond, he threw the club smack in the middle of the pond, turned to me, and said "I figure it might as well have the club I used too, since it was clearly broken".

Afterwards, you realize it isn't fun to snot a mouthful of beer through your nose :P

If you're caught drinking on a course here they throw you off and never let you on again, and they may try and have you arrested.

Really?  I've maybe seen this rule on college courses, but worst we have around here are courses without cart girls and you have to wait till you make the turn to get a refill.

Ahh yes, The wonder of Cart Girls.  Drew better be careful, because if he hasn't experienced this well then he may very well faint again.

Off the top of my head, I think every place has a cart girl except college courses and a local city course.  A cart girl is the man's equivalent to the ice-cream man of your youth.

Mine is the BBB, the Biggest Big Bertha, they stopped making them but they are stilll pretty popular on tour.  It looks just like a warbird, but bigger.  Although compared to the newer drivers like the C4...it looks small.  no blue trim.  Yup purple and yellow...can't miss that bad boy.  I agree, lower loft is not always better/longer.  My BBB is 10.5, but my previous club was a 11 warbird that I could drill.  I practiced on the lower loft because of the free club, but I always wanted a higerlofted one.  I hit an 8 deg club once, I think it actually went underground before coming up just past the women's tees.  :P

Chad...no Cart Girls...you have courses without CART GIRLS????

omg, when my game is bad at the very least I have nice cold beer from a beautiful girl to look forward to!   ;)

We even rate em down here in Texas  :o

(the cart girl pics look like they change on reload, but Tour 18 and Cowboys are where I have playd recently  ;D  )

Nope, the courses I played barely had anything but old guys to yell at you and make you clench your teeth until it hurts.

I didn't need a bunch of guys yelling at me to make me clench my teeth - the game seemed to accomplish that all on its own.  :P

I played seriously for about 2 years. My scores were getting worse, not better, and so I decided to quit the game for the benifit of those who enjoy it. The highlight for me was playing on a muni 9 hole course with a friend, and having a third golfer join us. He was around the same age, and definitely knew his game. On a par 3, he took out a 4 iron and slapped in a hole in one. Considering pars were still an achievement for me at the time, it was a pretty amazing sight.

Yes, picture Happy Gilmore walking with Bob Barker.  That was a typical golfing afternoon for me.  I was actually quite good considering I only had a couple months of experience, but the social aspect was terrible.

When I go with my brother-in-laws, they tell the cart girl what holes they want to see her again on, and pay her in advance.  They tell her if she's there when requested, the tip will be worth it.  We end up having the cart girl swing by about 4 times over 18, PLUS a stopover between 9-10.  If I was a big drinker, we could prolly get that Golf Cart DUI  ::)

Our cart girls are hit or miss, but usually they have 2 or 3 so we get some fresh faces to look at.

I hit an 8 deg club once, I think it actually went underground before coming up just past the women's tees.  :P

If you're playing with the right kind of guys (like me and my buddies) if you don't get past the ladies tees, you get to re-tee from 'em with no stroke penalty.  Most "Sally" shots buys at the 19th  :D

Oh, and we're LOUD about why you're buying ;D

My Warbird 8o is a long low running drive that almost never gets more than 30-35 feet off the ground.  Safe, straight, average distance.

I'll be looking for one of those.  I like the Warbird, but want a bigger clubhead.  Sounds like the perfect solution for me!
