NES Question
« on: July 08, 2005, 02:55:38 pm »
I am making a nes console based arcade machine, using the real console.  I was wondering if there is a way to make it so there is a game selection and I dont have to always put in the cartridge.  I mean like how some machines have a number 1-15 and when you pick that nbumber that game either just plays or get put into the cartridge some how. This may sound confusing, but any help is appreciated.

You would either need a custom-built changer similar to a cd changer or some sort of 10-way adapter that doesn't exist. If you plan on using the original Nintendo hardware, expect to pay a hundreds of dollars more just to find a way to switch games like you've explained. Neither of those methods would allow for an on-screen menu system, though. It would be like punching in numbers in an old school jukebox, and it would cost more than the rest of your machine put together.

If you want to use hardware, consider a Nintendo Playchoice 10 arcade machine. You can just plug in whichever games you want and scroll through them with an on-screen menu.

Otherwise, if software will do, just use an emulator. Nintendo emulation doesn't require a PC with great stats. It doesn't even require a PC with good stats.

nintendo did make a muliple games NES that was used in stores for trying out games and also in hotels. They these systems used non-standard carts so you wouldn't be able to add your own games and also the system would be very expensive. You could always hack one of those xx-in-1 controllers they have at the mall and online.

Couldnt you take the cart slot out, wire up a dozen or so of them, and put switches inbetween them to make the final connection for each cart? that way you could have X# of them hooked up at once and what not..

Hard to explain really, but im sure someone will know what im talking about and can explain better

I don't know if that's such a good idea for the game cartridge or the NES. That would be like ejecting it and sticking it back in while the thing is on. I've never tried it, but i wouldn't want to find out the hard way that it's a bad idea.

I was under the impression that the demo stands used standard NES carts(though the arcade and hotel units didn't).

...

Okay, I'm looking around, and there's TWO diffrent retail units, one of which takes standard carts, the other doesn't.

The one you're thinking of.

If you're powering down you might as well be manually switching carts.
