Which online/correspondence college is cheapest.
« on: July 08, 2005, 07:09:53 am »
I have been looking at the prices of the various colleges offering online and correspondence degrees and they COST MORE than tradition school does. Seems like a big rip off to me.

Any accredited schools out there that are actually cheap? And by accredited I mean actually accredited, not accredited by an organization with the word "online" in it, I can BUY a Masters degree from one of those colleges cheaper than University of Phoenix charges for one credit hour.

No one takes online degrees seriously yet.  You're still much better off going to a real school.

I agree.

If it came down to two people and one guy earned his at school and the other bloke got his off a cereal box..... well the decision is pretty obvious.

I can say from experience on both sides of the hiring process that in my line of work, resumes that list correspondance schools get dropped in the recycling bin.

yeah the good thing about online classes through a community college is its just normal college credits, that you can transfer or get a normal 2 year degree with. not some weird online school

ACCIS - they are accredited and offer computer science degrees. I was working on my masters from them until a family situation made it impractical to continue. BTW my current bachelors degree is from a "real" school but it is not accredited. Accreditation doesn't hinder you in anyway from obtaining a job...unless you're interested in teaching at a state university or something like that it doesn't really make much difference as long as you earned your degree.

That's not true.  The first thing a resume has to pass is the manager/colleagues of the person to be hired.  I have yet to see someone with a degree from a correspondance school be taken seriously, nor anyone with a 'degree' from a nonaccredited school.  We throw their resumes out on purpose, in fact.

I was an HR manager for a couple of years at my company. I hope the the people whose resumes were trashed don't find out our you could be sued for discrimination. If they could not perform the job that is one thing, but not hiring based on solely where they earned their degree is completely different ( Assuming this is in the States)

Erm, no.  Throwing their resume out because you don't consider them qualified is not illegal.  Discrimination based on race, gender, and age is illegal.  You can be sued for ANYTHING, but that doesn't mean the suit has merit.

Paige, go to www.nukeworker.com

It sounds like you might fit in quite well.  You'll need your 40 hour hazwop training, then you can hit the road with your motorhome and start making "the big bucks".

You'd start out as a "deconner" which basically means you'd go clean up hazardous and nuclear junk.  It sounds bad, but it's safe.

The guys on that site are pretty friendly and will help you determine if you'd be a good fit.  You shouldn't have any trouble jumping around the country since it's work related.  Just set up a home base at a family members house for mail and hit the road.  There are a lot of guys that do this for 6 months out of the year and take the other 6 months off.

By law don't you have to keep all resumes for a certain period of time.

Not sure, but even if you do, it doesn't mean you ever have to look at it again.

Not sure, but even if you do, it doesn't mean you ever have to look at it again.  The general process is that someone submits the resume to a company.  HR throws it into a database they keep, and eventually it may come up in a query for relevant search terms.  The HR person eyeballs it, and if it seems somewhat reasonable, passes it on to the hiring manager.  The hiring manager then scrutinizes it and decides whether or not to contact the person.  In my field, few managers will contact a person whose primary education is from a correspondence school where the majority of the pool has degrees from reputable universities.

Now, that's not to say this is true for all fields or even lower levels of my own (software development), but this is the way it is done every place I have worked in my career.

Yeah, but the point is the law that states you have to keep the resume is by the Age Discrimination, Disability, and Civil Rights Acts.  Wouldn't that mean that basically the act of throwing away the resumes is a violation of the Discrimination Acts, which would be discrimination?

and Sorry to HiJack your thread Paige.

I never said it was deleted from the HR database, just that the paper copy was thrown into the trash can.  Technically, the company has retained the resume, but practically it is not ever going to be used.

Woops, missed that.  My bad.

Easy thing to have done.  I suspect Paige's best solution here is a brick and mortar school in his area.  I'm sure STL has quite a few good ones, it's a very up and coming area.
