Can/Should games in mame play at 800X600?
« on: July 07, 2005, 12:42:18 pm »
I have XP and mamewah to run at 800X600 with no problems but when I launch a game it scrolls, so I went to the games (metal slug X) ini file and changed the res from 620x480 (or something like that) to 800x600 but the game still scrolls when I launch it.

I am using an old wells 19in monitor with arcade vga...

Make sure that the resolutions for XP and MameWah are the same. If they are different, than the hold settings on them are different.

No, don't use 800x600 on an arcade monitor.  You should use low-res modes, as the ArcadeVGA is inteded (eg 321x240, 368x240 etc...)

Try my MAME Resolution Tool to generate suitable ini files for you to achieve this.

btw, this is because arcadevga -> arcade monitor supports 640x480+ but in interlaced mode.  This makes the monitor draw every other line every pass... Then the next pass it does the other.  This gives flashing and is very annoying.

640x288 I believe is the highest resolution that you can get without interlaced mode.

Yep, but I find this mode a bit useless personally.

Of course the interlaced modes are of use, for fitting medium/high res. games onto a standard res. screen.  Or squashing vertical games onto a horizontal screen...but otherwise you should use the low-res modes.
