« on: July 01, 2005, 03:34:57 pm »
i wasnt expecting it to work but i gave it a go.  just burn to cd and boot the computer with the cd in the drive. works on arcade monitor, has sound and loads super quick (even on a 500MHz PC)

absolute quality ;D

I tried it recently and was also very impressed. You can also install it onto a USB pen drive which is cool.

Unfortunately, I cannot get it to work with my new graphics card (Geforce 6600GT). I suspect this could be solved by replacing the kernel with a more up to date version but it's tricky to do this unless you also have a full Linux distro on your hard drive.

I've tried this but failed, I think my mobo is the culprit :(

I currently don' t have a computer in my arcade cabinet  >:(  I have my dual celeron system BUT I don't have a hard drive for it.  I've been tempted to create an advancecd for it that loads roms from a network share.

Have you tried updating your BIOS?

When I first got my motherboard it didn't provide the facility to boot from a USB device. But when I updated the BIOS this facility appeared even though it is not documented on the manufacturer's website.

I will have to try it on my dual celeraon system sometime.  This computer does have boot devices for USB-FDD, CDROM, and ZIP.  I couldn;t get either of them to work.  It might be the usb drive too.

Does your CD-rom spin continually while playing games or do the games get loaded into RAM?  I'm just wondering cuz my CD-Rom is loud.

advancemame is a modded version of mame.  runs straight off the cd. best of all it's dead easy to configure.

It's probably my usb stick.  I setup it both as not USB-ZIp compatible and as USB-ZIP compatible when running the makeusb bat file.  But I couldn;t get it to boot on this computer.

But it needs to be able to boot on whatever I put in my arcade.  I think I will resurect my dual celeron system again.  I want to do the usb stick thing because it would be easy to add games, and it is rewritable so I can switch settings easily.  That way if I want to setup samba and a network share I don't have to host the roms on that stick.

I tried 3 computers (with 2 monitors each) this weekend until I found a combination that worked. I'm generally disappointed by the limited video card and monitor support. But I was pleased with the setup and "installation" once it worked. But I can't imagine suggesting this to anyone that doesn't know how to grep xrc files.

The first computer had an incompatible video card, and possible an incompatible LCD display; but switching to a CRT didn't allow advanceCD to run. The second computer froze up whenever MAME launched. The third computer had an LCD display that was incompatible so I switched it out for an old 15 inch CRT monitor.

It seems odd that AdvanceCD doesn't work on TVs and Arcade Monitors when it's based on AdvanceMAME which specializes in working on TVs and Arcade Monitors. *shrug*

I do like the effort and I hope to expand on it a bit, for personal use. :)

Just found this prog, it's sweet!  ran perfectly right off the vanilla install.

Before I burned the CD I copied a bunch of roms into the roms folder and viola, they showed up on the burned CD just fine.  I still need to copy the snapshots/movies/screenshots files for the full effect.

I wonder how hard it would be to get the screen rotated?  I'll check into that, also.  But very impressed so far.

where did you put the roms?  After you unzip the downloaded advcd pentium file put the roms in the folder:

arcade\rom

and then execute the createimage file (or whatever it's called?).  It creates the .iso file which you then burn to CD.  The roms are built into the iso.

AFAIK AdvanceCD uses Linux's FBDev drivers built into the kernel, which doesn't support TV-out.  For that you need drivers which support TV out.  Currently AdvanceMAME supports FBDev (no TV-out support), SVGALib (no TV-out support), and SDL via X (TV-out support, dependant on the driver you use).  Also it's worth noting that the PAL and NTSC TV settings in the advcfg utility are for people who desire to build their own RGB hacks to output direct from the analogue DSUB15 on most video cards straight into RGB input on a TV (ie: SCART, etc).

Arcade monitor support is there, but you have to change the config file manually.  This step was done on purpose to prevent not so bright people from destroying their PC monitors.  Consider it a litmus test: if you have to ask HOW to add support for real arcade hardware, then you probably shouldn't be doing it.

Bah! litmus test.. I'd say that would bethe case 50% of the time. I have modified the config for this by adding my own .rc file to whatever \dir that it was sappose to go in but it is very tough to get the arcade monitors to werk with it.

do we have any advance Cd gurus in this forum?

thx

Decided after a long LONG haitus that I would finally start working on my cocktail cabinet.  Bought a Micro-ATX board based on a Centaur/Cyrix/VIA/Whatever-They-Are-Called-Now CPU.  Looking at Advance CD as a potentially easy way to install and boot from a CF card ala JoyMonkey and his DOS install (rather stick with Linux then DOS, but if this doesn't work then DOS will be next).

Anyone install Advance CD to a hard drive or CompactFlash with success?  Any tips?  Anyone use it successfully with an ITX mobo?

i use the same set up and have had no problem making the cd or play a boot usb stick, both of them work great.....
perfect to take college with so anytime you want to play all you need to do is  reboot ur laptop.....
i have tried making the HD bootup with advance cd, but kept getting problems so going to try doing the whole progress through msdos and will see if it work.....
if i manage to do it i will let you all know the best way of doing it????
