n00b questions
« on: July 01, 2005, 12:02:20 am »
Hi
I am building my first cabinet and need info on monitors. I dont have much money to spend, so I planned on using a 19" VGA monitor I had in my basement. Will that work all rght? Also, I have no Idea how to mount it, since its over 75lbs.

Yeah some people mount them by building an angled shelf (sometimes flat if it's a high cabinet) and using straps or large cable ties joined together. Try not to block the vents of the plastic casing, and make sure there's good ventilation in the cabinet itself, with fans if possible. The shelf needs to be quite strong obviously because of the weight, some people use metal brackets with lots of little screws, some people use wood with lots of very strong builders adhesive and nails/screws.

I've only ever mounted a genuine arcade monitor, which has it's own mounting bolt holes that fit right into the old cabinet I refurbished, so I've never had to build a shelf, so someone who has done this themselves might be able to give you more details.

Thanks. I'd imagine it would take a very strong shelf for this one. I carried it up 2 flights of stairs. The heaviness is probably also because its 10 years old.

I use a 27" TV in my cab and it's pretty darn heavy. I used an angled piece of 3/4" ply wood I had laying around from another project. It holds the TV fine but, being angled, you have to have a bracket to keep it from sliding back away from the bezel. Just letting you know, plywood works just fine.

Cool. I assumed it would have split as soon as I put the monitor on it.
