This is what I am sending Nintendo of America via the link in the 1080up program.
Hello,
I'm writing to voice my concern on Nintendo's decision to not include High Definition as a standard option for consumers in their next generation console. I currently enjoy a High Definition TV setup with my Gamecube, component cable and Wavebird controller. It's one of the greatest experiences I've ever had with a home console. I can not imagine going back to anything else and it's a driving factor of my future purchases, one that Nintendo helped to define.
I find it absurd that Nintendo has already taken a step backwards on this evolution of immersive gameplay. With the discontinuing of the option for the Gamecube while also touting the next platform as a "Revolution" lacking this great feature. I am also aware of the Nintendo consumer sales study where it was determined the feature was hardly used, but please consider when this study was done, where the market is now and where it's inevitably going. Given how Nintendo wanted to position the Gamecube with a lowest price point possible to increase sales and profit at the time, this made sense. However it will be a disappointment, if not mistake, that the option of basic native HDTV support is not included when the new console launches. Nintendo can't possibly be so narrow minded and think of only the market in 2006 when the console launches? What about the market in 2008-9 when the consoles are just starting to hit their peak in market presence and sales?
As a long time fan I'd love to see Nintendo reach the market dominance it once enjoyed in the late 80's and early 90's. I'm also realistic and know that it will never happen again because Nintendo doesn't have the market share to dictate the industry like it once did. I know Nintendo is a game company first and foremost, not a technology company. This has been what is great about Nintendo and why they will always have a place in creating games and consoles. However, the two lines are blurring with the successful introduction of competition from industry leaders of different backgrounds. They are helping to rewrite the rules of the market to push their agendas and profits. I do not necessarily agree with their philosophies either as business plans unfold for their next generation consoles. That's why I was proud in knowing I could count on Nintendo to deliver the kind of innovative entertainment I enjoy for a fair price, until now.
