Xbox buttons - help from Xbox gamers please
« on: June 16, 2005, 06:16:18 pm »
Just wondering if many games require the back, black & white buttons on the Xbox controller?  I don't have many games but I don't think I've ever used the 'back' button, and the black/white ones only for changing view in drivers.

Basically what I'm getting at is would I need these on my control panel(s)?  atm I'm intending to have seperate Xbox compatible stick and wheel panels...of course I need the view change buttons on the wheel panel but how about the stick one?

I will only be playing games which use digital controls on the stick panel, so mainly fighters (& shooters if there are any).  Driving games are the main reason I want to put an Xbox in my cab...playing a lot of arcade OutRun 2 lately has made me miss the wheel & general arcade feeling...

Thanks for any advice :)

On DOA Ultimate 2 you can use Black to change in your other character but you can also just push all "abxy" and it does the same thing...  Just though you might want to know.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

they (black & white) are used for all sorts of functions, but not normally a primary function... halo (and 2) turns the flashlight on/off... nothing that can't be lived without, but is adding 2 more buttons that bad?

back button... I dont' think thats important enough to worry about.  I've never used it I dont' think?

I was actually playing ESPN football last night and realized I use every button on the controller

Back - calls time out
black - fake pump for throwing
white - throws ball away.

I may have them mixed but I know I use them.

Thanks guys :)

How about L & R triggers?  Are they used much in fighters etc?  I saw one of the arcade sticks has them as well as A, B, X, Y, Black & White...

Soul Caliber uses the shoulders, iirc.  Black & White are essential in lots of games.  I know that I've also played games that make use of the back button (aside from ESPN) too, but nothing comes immediately to mind.

I think in Soul Calibur 2 the shoulder buttons are just shortcuts for soul charge (a+b+k IIRC).

I think given I only want to play fighters, shooters & drivers I might risk skipping the back button.

Thanks for the input :)

Yep, I will do!  Ideally I only want 6 buttons (the panel is for MAME etc. too) so I'll go with A,B,X,Y, Black,White.

Then eventually I just need to figure out how to get an arcade wheel & my existing arcade pedals working on the Xbox too.  That'll be fun  ::)

lol I hear that.  I'm going full tilt.  I am putting all 8 buttons on my panel heh.  The DB25 switch box is a good idea.  I may have to use that for my project.

If you ever mod your xbox, those buttons are used all the time as well.

As far as using the pedals/wheel, if they are USB you can get a USB adapter for your xbox that might do the trick.  Depending on how they interface they might just automagically work.  A good resource that I've used for my xbox cabinet has been xbox-scene.com.

Good luck.

I believe the little black button is used to "slide" when playing "Robots" .... which is a very cool game my younger children play.

I do plan to eventually, to save swapping discs.  Do you mean the buttons are used in the interface?

My pedals are USB via one of Dave's AKI board...I had seen these USB adaptors but from what I could gather they would probably only work in homebrew apps...even if the xbox could recognise the device I'm not sure how it would know to map the inputs to the L & R triggers (?)

I have played several games that not only use the triggers and black and white buttons, but also clicking the thumbsticks!  Mostly these are stealth games, so you may never play those.

(Personally, I think everyone should mod their XBox.  Just for the convenience, if nothing else!   ;D )
