arcade vga or monitor hack? which is better?
« on: June 19, 2005, 12:17:12 pm »
i am building a mame for one of my astro city candy cabs for a customer.  I have build mames with computer monitors berfore but never used an arcade monitor before.  done my research and found two methods wither hack a monitor cable or buy a arcade vga for $89 plus ship.  Is there a difference that I should be concerned about?  Would there be any issues using any partiucular games?  I plan on putting in a 2.0 mhz cpu with 15 mb hd.  so any assistance would help.

thanks

Both will work. The ArcadeVGA is easier, but it's also more expensive. It's just a matter of what you prefer - spending more money or spending more time.

AVGA also gives you more versatility...  You'll be able to run a wider variety of software using the AVGA, since you won't be dependant on the software to output the proper video signal.

I ran my system for ages with a hack, it was fine. not perfect but more than enough to not bother me.
Anyway about a month ago i took the jump and I'm not switching back.

AVGA All the way.  its easy there are tools available to configure most things for you.
Yes it saves heaps of time and makes running other emulators easier..

ArcadeVGA makes it possible to run (almost) ANY windows app on an arcade monitor.  Within seconds.

Definately worth every penny IMHO.

I've just ordered my arcadevga card and can't wait to get it set up!
Minwah do you have any skins for mamewah in the really low res needed for use with arcadevga?

I have one I personally use at 368x240, PM me if you would like it...you can just about see it running on my machine here: http://mamewah.mameworld.net/cabinets.htm

FYI you can run layouts at 640x480 with the AVGA.  Quite useful if you want to fit a lot on screen, but of course it is interlaced so it will flicker...I much prefer a low-res mode.
