can any art gurus help with artwork?
« on: June 18, 2005, 03:53:02 am »
I'm looking for uaii side and marquee artwork to reflect the first arcade I ever went to.  It was called, "Detour".   The block letters were typical of the detour signs with an orange background and black letters.  The sign (which I would like to implement in a marquee) had "DETOUR" with thick arrows going out from either side of the the letters, turning down and underlines detour with both arrowheads meeting in the middle and underneath the "detour" letters.  Side art I'm pretty open to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I've seen some great talent here and I would love to grace my cab with something special.

thanks again! (PS, I've got some leaf spring buttons as a thank you to contributor of the final design.)

I'm not sure if I understand exactly where the arrows are supposed to be coming from and going to. Here's a couple loose interpretations. Maybe it'll be a decent starting point if nothing else.

The second one was just a bit of experimenting. I just realized that it looks a lot like a Black & Decker product logo.

Actually it's another case of not finding a font I wanted and drawing it from scratch. I was just messing around with the block letters to stretch them out and make arrows.

Or maybe it's just a case of me having too much time. Now that I look at it, I think I could throw "motorsports" on the bottom and sell decals on eBay :)

Crowquill nice!  I was thinking that the arrows would be separate from the words.  the back of each arrow starts at the beginning and end of the word in the middle, turns down, goes underneath the words and each arrow head meets in the middle below the words.

Maybe you could try sketching it in mspaint real quick, to make it easier for them to understand what you're looking for.

Is this more like what you were thinking? Here's a couple variations. Thanks for the sketch, I just wasn't getting it. It makes complete sense now that I read it again.

How about the arrow points? Should they come to a sharp point or have rounded points?

Crowquill, those are just what I'm looking for. There are actually some variations I haven't thought of.

Shouldn't be a problem. I'll take care of it as soon as I get home from work.

I was hoping to keep the whole design as wide and short as possible since that's the format of a marquee.

Should we figure out how to use it as a marquee and sideart? The sideart should be easy since you can pretty much make a rectangle to look like a road sign. Probably with rounded corners and a decently thick black border.

What are the dimensions of the marquee and what size are you shooting for for the sideart? You said you were using the UAII plans right?

well the marquee should be exactly the same size as the UAII marquee.  I'm not looking for anything really big on the sides.  Maybe something large but doesn't take up the whole side.  I'm really open to anything creative on sideart that follows the basic theme.  thanks again crowquill!

I tweaked the scaling on most everything to tone down the outside arrows a bit. I also elongated them to fit on the marquee better. I believe the marquee dimensions are right--they're 7.5" x 25.06". It's the same dimensions as Clandeggin's Starfighter marquee in the art library. It'll be an easy tweak if that's not quite right.

I was thinking about the side art.  What would be pretty neat is a collage of characters actually walking and taking a detour.  I could have sworn I saw something similar to it on a cocktail...not sure though...  I do like the road sign theme as well...

What do you think of the marquee? Are there things to adjust or does it look completed to  you?

I love the marquee!  I can already see it on my cab...
Could you send or post the latest marquee as well as the 2nd one in the group of three in illustrator/pdf?  I'm torn between the two...

I'll get them uploaded and give a link sometime tomorrow afternoon. I'm stuck working third shift this week, so I'll take care of it as soon as I get up tomorrow afternoon.

http://home.fuse.net/abrenner/Detour_Marquee_Funky.pdf

They're PDFs, but it can still be opened in Illustrator for editing.

get 'em while they're hot. hope they serve you well.

Like I seid before, I'm glad to help. Now I've got to get my token designs together.

Thanks Crowquill!  Enjoy the buttons!  You've got me psyched on my project.  You wouldn't happen to have any collage prints for sideart around would you?
