Would you get an XBox, GameCube or DS?
« on: June 14, 2005, 08:20:39 pm »
I completely forgot to order my console from freegamingsystems.com and I'm having trouble choosing one. I've already got a couple of PS2's and a GBA (which I don't really play anymore since I don't use public transport as much). No one system appeals to me more than the other right now. The GameCube or the DS have some games (or will have) that I'd really like to play that I can't get for PS2, on the other hand the X-Box could be hacked to play console emus and a bunch of other geeky stuff. Also, I'm told XBox games will sound much better than PS2 games with my 5.1 sound system too.

So, if you had to choose one right now what would you go for and why?

Gamecube, you really would be missing out if you didn't play RE4 and the next Zelda, that alone is enough.

I did some searching after I posted this and just ordered the XBox. I think the amount of geeky junk I can do with it outweighs the couple of GameCube games I want to play  ;D

On an unrelated note my bud bought a DS then got a PSP a month later. Hasn't looked back ever since. I think I saw the DS floating in a box somewhere.

It pains me to say Xbox.  There's so much I love about the Gamecube including a half dozen or so MUST have games and the greatest controller ever made.  But an Xbox with a mod chip gives you so much.

Lilwolf....modding an Xbox doesn't make it act more like a PC except that you can run Linux on it, but relatively few people have any interest in that.  Here is one example of what I do with my xbox:

My Xbox is in my living room, hooked to my home theater.  My PC is in my office, but has my entire MP3 collection and my entire movie collection and my entire TV show collection (the latter two are ripped to DIVX files).  When I turn on my Xbox I get a very slick menu that gives me access, not only to all the games I have sitting on the harddrive inside my xbox (about 60), but it gives me transparent access to all that media saved on my PC in the other room, which it streams to my home theater when requested.  Xbox Media Center also takes the liberty of automatically downloading CD cover art from the CDDB and Movie cover art from IMDB (as well as detailed information about virtually any movie in existence).  I can also run emulators to play the entire libraries of NES, Gameboy, Master System, Super Nintendo, Genesis, Playstation 1 and Nintendo 64.  It even has MAME.  So instead of having all my media trapped on my PC, I get to have it where it is really useful, on my sofa with surround sound and a nice TV, rather than sitting in an office chair by myself (albeit with surround sound) on my much smaller computer monitor.  Oh yeah...and like I said, the games are on my xbox hard drive, so i don't even have to put a disc in the drive to play them.

Here are some screenshots of Xbox Media Center.  (P.S.  The software and skin you see in these pictures costs nothing)

I would go with the gamecube, you get most of the 3rd party stuff thats on xbox, (with a better controller IMO) and the nintendo stuff as usual is top notch.

Yeah....that guy at www.chokemaniac.net makes consistently amazing skins.  There's another one called Orbz that is pretty impressive.  I almost chose it over this one, but in the end decided this one was classier.  At one time the chokemaniac guy had one available that was all pinks and purples, but was totally pimp.  I would have used it, but it didn't work well at 1080i -- the font was too small to be very readable (at least on a 40" TV).  If you're not using HD you should check it out too.

Eh?  The C-stick is analog.  The original Xbox controller is one of the worst in history.  The Xbox S-controller isn't bad, but it's not nearly as comfortable as the Gamecube controller, or as intuitive to use.  And the black & white buttons are awkward to press on the S-controller (though Gamecube's Z button placement leaves a little to be desired as well).  The MadCatz Microcon Xbox controllers come close to the Gamecube in the comfort and button placement department, but the non-uniform shape/size of the Gamecube buttons still makes it incredibly intuitive compared with other controllers.

well that is also YOUR opinion, I hate the gamecube controller, i cant use it at all i think its all made wrong, but the xboxcontroller i love it i think its the best controller ever made ( the s-controller) its why more comfortable in my hands than the gamecube controller, it feels solid. but when i play my gamecube i feel like im going to brake the stupid controller it feeles like it made very cheaply and the d-pad on the gamecube controller is sosmall i cant even use it, my thumb is bigger than the entire d-pad i cant use it. I dont know anyone that likes the gamecube controller better than the xbox controller even my die hard nintendo friends.

The top scientists from MIT, Oxford, the National Science Institute, the Arab Idea Exchange, and the International Institute for the Advancement of Interaction and Ergonomics (IIAIE) have concluded that not only is the Xbox controller uncomfortable, but it can cause blindness and ostheoperosis.  Oxford and the Tokyo Technology Thinktank have corroborated these findings.

Nice bunch of links, by the way.

The first one is a weblog of one guy who derides the Gamecube controller in favor of the PS2, but prior to comparing those two systems he decided not even to get an Xbox at all.

The Second one is a favorable review of the Xbox controller, but the same site gives the same score (8 out of 10) to a less expensive 3rd party Gamecube controller.  Score - Gamecube

The third link is to the Team Xbox forums....useless

The fourth link, a random forum in which 3 people like the Xbox-S or the giant Xbox controller best.  5 people say that Gamecube's is best or that it ties for best with PS2.  8 people say that PS2 controller is best or that it ties with Gamecube.  Almost all those who voted anything other than Gamecube (including those voting Xbox) who state a second place preference say that Gamecube was a close 2nd place.

I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to get out of the fifth link.

The sixth link is a negative review of some obvious piece of crap, cheep-ass, 3rd party controller -- not a review of THE Gamecube controller.

Okay....I guess we can let it go.

Hey, just so you know I made up all that stuff about scientists.  In fact, as far as I know there are no such things as an Arab Idea Exchange, International Institute for the Advancement of Interaction and Ergonomics (IIAIE), or a Tokyo Technology Thinktank.  I just made all that up to make your life harder, LMAO.

 ;D
