Kymeara just shuts down...
« on: June 14, 2005, 01:00:37 am »
Well, I just finished putting together my first arcade cabinet  ;D, and was putting the software on it.  I was plannning on using kymeara to launch games, since it appeared to be everything I wanted - simple, yet powerful, with lots of sorting and list options.  I installed it, set up the config according to the (rather sparse) documentation, then, with bated breath, double-clicked the executable.  And - the screen flickered, and then gave me an error message telling me that kymeara had to close and I should try restarting it.  Where am I going wrong?  I have tried this on 3 different computers (2 Xp, 1 win2k) and had a similar result, and since my searching hasn't found anything, I am certain it's some stupidity of mine, but I consider myself a smart, technicaly competent guy and I can't figure it out.  Please help me - even if you don't understand the source of my problem, maybe go over what you did to get a sucessful kymeara install so i can try to follow that.

Thanks in advance,

Matt Austin

Go to the Kymaera directory, and open the kymaera.log file. Post the last few lines here in this forum, and I'll tell you what's wrong. Kymaera is designed to work out-of the box, so it must be some setting that you changed. Also, if you want to have movies playing, you need to have the latest MediaPlayer installed for all the codecs.

First off, thanks - most commercial software dosn't get support this good, and from its creator, no less.  WHen was the last time bill gates walked you through setting up windows?

PMF, this is what was in the log:

270 - Log initiated
~
[I removed all these middle lines - they were just loading different files.  If you need them, I can post them]
~
711 - Exit startup
37063 - Shutting down
37143 - Shutting down
37153 - Shutting down

Actually, I do need to see what it was loading. Post the middle portion too. It seems strange that the last lines in the text file are:

711 - Exit startup
37063 - Shutting down
37143 - Shutting down
37153 - Shutting down

Check you inputs and see what the exit key is being defined as. Is this an out-of-the-box installation, or did you modify/setup things/ change keys/etc...? If so, what did you do?

This is what mine looks like:

       46 : Log System initted
       46 : registering PNG
       46 : registering JPG
       46 : registering GIF
      140 : registering CD
      140 : registering JOYSTICK
      140 : setting app path
      140 : Calling startup
      156 : Current working directory is C:\Emu\Frontend\Kymaera\
      156 : sound start
      156 : Loading kymaera.kfg
      156 : EMU load 16 gamelist lists\mame3.xml
      171 : load gamelist lists\mame3.xml 1
      312 : EMU load 16 gamelist lists\favorite.xml
      312 : load gamelist lists\favorite.xml 1
      328 : EMU load 16 gamelist lists\atari_games1.xml
      343 : load gamelist lists\atari_games1.xml 1
      984 : created back buffer 640 480
      984 : exit startup
     1000 : Initializing fonts
     1000 : Initializing Input
     1000 : Initializing Timer
    10156 : shutting down
    10875 : shutting down

I see that your installation path is d:\Kymaera, I really haven't tried to install it to other directories. Try installing Kymaera to the default C:\Emu\Frontend\Kymaera\ directory. It looks like your Skin may not be loading correctly, What has me a little confused is that your log doesn't show the following:

       46 : registering PNG
       46 : registering JPG
       46 : registering GIF
      140 : registering CD
      140 : registering JOYSTICK
      140 : setting app path
      140 : Calling startup

Are you using the latest 2.0.2 version of Kymaera? Or did you download the 2.00 or previous version?

I'll try reloading it - i actually just fixed my partitions so I only have 1 drive.  i thought it would be cool to have to OS on its own drive and then all the roms and assc files on another, but it just wasn't worth the trouble when my OS drive got full.  I am running 2.0.2

One thing to note that if *any* directories aren't where they're supposed to be, Kymaera will complain and shut down.  It could be anything.  Double check *everything*.  This includes empty directories.  Say if you don't have marquees, and you leave the marquees entry blank, it'll error out.

At least, that was with the last version I played with.  I don't know if that's with the most current version, what ever that is.
