Custom/Made-to-order PC's...Where's best?
« on: June 13, 2005, 04:03:03 pm »
I'm looking to pick up a new system (Dual Xeon), and rather than buy parts from 12 different vendors, I'd like to try to get most everything from one place. I've been out of the loop, as far as purchasing goes, for so long I have no idea who is reputable anymore.

I don't want a Dell-like service...I'd like something that let's me choose from wider variety of stuff.
Something like this place, but inside the U.S. (if it's on the East Coast, that'd be even better): http://www.vadim.co.uk/Custom+PCs/Workstations/Custom+Nexus+Intel-D604W-PCIe

Anyone know of any?

Thanks,
mrC

I bought a computer from them about 5 years ago and the price was great, but the tech support on the phone is definitely Engrish but adequate.
I recommend building your own computer with their online thingy, but some of the pre-made ones are a real steal.

In my experience, buying all your parts from Newegg and slapping it together yourself almost always seems to work out cheapest (and you get exactly what you want). I usually do a Pricewatch search for the more expensive parts (graphics card, motherboard etc), and Newegg is always within a couple of dollars of the least expensive. And they usually ship insanely fast.

I was kinda' thinking that might be the way to go, they do seem pretty decent. Thanks for the input.

I'm quite sure numerous people here have ordered from NewEgg - just got some stuff mahsef.  Excellent service and always a pleasure to deal with.  Makes the things you spend a few bucks more on worth the $$

I'd guess anyone other than a Dell-like service wouldn't have as much experience with what you're after, so if you have the experience, go it yourself, or stick with a Dell wannabe - you're relying on someone just like yourself (essentially), so it's the same crapshoot, or the higher Dell $$

For me, it's a toss up between Newegg.com and TigerDirect.com. I've built several of my own from individual parts from both sites. No problems with either. Newegg seems to have better prices, generally. But I like the layout of TigerDirect better. I can usally find what I want faster on TD.

TigerDirect is notorious for not making good on their rebates (which they offer all the time).  Be careful with them!

I've been buying from Newegg for several years. Their prices aren't the cheapest around but its worth the extra for the customer service. Oh and don't believe what it says about motherboards being manufacturer warranty only. I've had DOA motherboards from them a couple of times (hey it happens...) and while you can't use their online RMA request form, a quick phonecall will get you an RMA with no quibbling or hassle whatsoever. Tremendous company to do business with.

I'll give another vote to newegg.  I've ordered tons of stuff from them.  Great prices, outstanding customer service, and extremely fast shipping.  I live on the east coast as well, and usually get my stuff from them within 2 days of ordering.

Me too, most of my stuff seems to come from their NJ warehouse. Every now and then something will ship from CA, but it usually only adds another day to shipping time.
Newegg orders almost always arrive one day ahead of the FedEx 'expected delivery date'.

I have never had a problem with TigerDirect.  The rebates are controlled by the manufacturers that offer them, not by TigerDirect.  I have bought many things from them, and I have recieved every rebate.  I even had some of them direct deposited to my account.

They even have a rebate guarantee prigram now.  it is a lot of hoops to jump through, but they are making an attempt to make sure that their customers are not disappointed.

Because I live half an hour from one of their outlets, I don't use their shipping.  My wife's cousin ordered a computer from them and it arrived in 26 hours!.
Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!

These guys offer a much larger selection than most, especially if you're looking for some cutting edge stuff.  For a company that builds the machine for you and offers support afterward they offer a pretty high level of customizability for a low price.  I've purchased about  20 - 30 computers from them.  Been pretty happy.

I haven't purchased anything from them in about a year, for what it's worth.

I hate to be the one to break it to ya, but your credibility, shmokes, is now shot.  Throw away the "I've built tens of tens of PCs from them" and the "I do IT work and know a little about PC's"....you are about to get served ::)

Oh, and thanks for the recommendation, shmokes.  I now feel confident I can order from them with no problems whatsoever ;) ;D
