Hey all,

My grandfather LOVES cribbage and he LOVES Scotland (no, it's not because of Braveheart), so I thought a nice fancy cribbage board all done over with a Scottish/MacNaughton theme would be pretty cool.  I have some tartan and I have a MacNaughton kilt pin for decoration, but I'm still hung up on one detail:

1) What can I use for the pegs? I thought maybe a few Scottish Lions made of pewter with a peg underneath (if there is even such a thing). My initial non-scottish idea was to use cotter pins wrapped in some kind of wire (for decoration).  Any other ideas?

2) I have 2 ideas, one harder than the other, that I'm going with for the board desig. One is round, in the shape of the crest, and the other is just plain ol' rectange. I'm going to try the round one first, and then move onto my backup plan if that doesn't work for some reason. Then, I'm going to cover the entire thing in the tartan, and stick the kilt pin right in the middle.

If not by using them as pegs, how can I work in a Scottish Lion-somthing into my design? I also need to work in the name "MacNaughton", I think.  I'm looking for ideas .. help?

Those pegs seem to be pretty small (looks like they've got 3/16" heads on them), adding a lion on top might not leave enough room to peg them next to each other (unless it's just a silhouette of a lion, but I'm picturing some engraved detail).

What's the usual size of the pegs and how many would you need? Next time I'm talking to my bronze casting rep I could ask how much something like this would cost with a custom detail. Do they need to be two different shades, or could they be all the same?

You could have a board CNC'd just as easily in an oval or rectangle- so long as you can provide an illustrator file with all the peg holes in position, most sign shops that machine hardwood could do it. They could engrave MacNoughton in there too.

OT: I wasn't sure what a cribbage board was so I Googled and found this delightful toilet seat.

haha! The "Training" cribbage set!  That's funny!

I didn't even consider getting it professionally CNC'd, but that's an option I guess!  It would come out better than with my hand-drill and bit collars! Hmm. I think I want to stick with doing it by hand though.  I'll just tell him the mass amount of imperfections are "personality". :)

I would like to have a full-sized cribbage board, enough for 3 peg strips, and each player would need 3 pegs with some type of differentiation between each player's pegs by color and/or style.  There are also (I think) 3 rows of 10-12 holes in the center of the board to keep track of how many games you've won.

Can your bronze-casting contact coat them in something to give them a diufferent color? Chrome, brushed steel, etc..?  I was thinking more along the lines of a pewter-cast lion cut-out, but that's only because I'm trying to get the scottish lion in there somewhere.  It doesn't need to be on the pegs.   I like the simple pegs the best, to be honest.

Hmm.. I'm still int he design phase so if you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

Thanks!

Nah -- most cribbage players will be happy with simple dowels of wood. If you want to be fancy, some kind of ivory lookalike (don't use real ivory, please). Most cribbage players are more interested in the speed of pegging than fancy pegs.

If you have a drillpress, you can make an outstanding board. Just make sure you finish the board before drilling the peg holes. You don't want any varnish going down into the holes.

I usually use stain for my cribbage boards -- looks nice, and the pegs don't stick in the holes.

Your best bet is to make your grandfather something interesting like a three-street board (three rows of pegs instead of two). That way he can play 2, 3 and 4 player games.

Google a three-street board to see what one looks like. A simple rectangular board is usually best. Add extra holes for "high hands" and games won and you'll have a winner.

Here's one I really like: http://www.drueke.com/product.asp?dept_id=42&product_id=38

Dude, it's a cool card game.  I bet you'd have problems with it though.....you gotta count higher than 21 ;)

What makes cribbage cool?  You get to say "knobs" ;D

Some of the guys that I ride the train with play cribbage.  The board they were using was missing the pegs.  They were using small nails and tines broken from a plastic fork.  :o

One of the guys had a board that was shaped somewhat like an artist paint palette.  It was kind of large to be using on the train though.

You could cast you own pegs in plastic resin, using one of the kits from Smooth-On or Alumilite.
