still cant get mslug5 to work
« on: June 13, 2005, 04:55:35 am »
running neomame plus - hv downloaded files and renamed to bins etc. Files load, but having a problem with '268-p1.bin'. Have tried renaming it, downloading the zip and also taking file from a hacked version - all with no luck. Someone out there MUST know how to solve this. Plenty of people are saying that mslug5 works on neomame.

You could always just live with Metal Slug 1 through 4.  I mean really, they're all much of a muchness.

ROM request to be used in an illegal mame build (unless you compiled it yourself... but then I would guess you wouldn't have a the problems your mentioning).

Not the place to ask.

And be happy playing MSlug1-4

I have a theory:  Emulators are made this hard to use to stop people like you using them.

Go ask the NeoMAME developers for help.

As mentioned, you are using a illegal MAME build and trying to warezify games that are still bringing an income to hard working game developers.  No-one here has time for you, nor your l33t h4x0r script-kiddiez spelling.

And to add to the other arguments, most fans of the Metal Slug games have agreed that Metal Slug 5 is rather crappy and pales in comparison to the first 4. From what I've heard, Metal Slug 3 was the apex of the series. 5 was very derivative and offered a minimum of gameplay with a maximum of reused art.

And we won't even speak of the upcoming Metal Slug 3D.

That's pretty much all Playmore has done since they've acquired SNK.  Hey, let's dust off these old sprites and slap together something to sell... sorry... I'll stop now.  I like SSV, so I guess it's not all a waste.

I hate to change the subject but.....

Actually this is false.  Metal Slug 5 was the first metal slug since 3 to use new sprites.  Mind you a lot were recycled, but that's nothing new in the Metal Slug series.    Unfortunately the boses sucked and the game was way too short.  So in other words it was a poorly designed game, but playmore did make an effort to add new things, they just suck at making games apparently.

Other than not having the source code available, why is that redistribution of MAME deemed 'illegal'?  There is nothing in license.txt that forbids making a derivative work with added drivers.

As for the 'illegal roms', it would seem that this game is just as legal as using any other rom in mame.  Anything else is just an arbitary line drawn in the sand.  As far as making money is concerned, I've never seen a Metal Slug 5 machine in town... yet there are a half dozen each of Galaga, Ms PacMan, and Street Fighter 2 machines that nobody feels bad about emulating at home.

As of MAME 0.96 it is illegal to make derivative builds using the "MAME" name without permission FULL STOP.  NeoMAME is on the MAME Dev's shitlist, and is most certainly an illegal build.

http://mamedev.com/legalfaq.html
http://mamedev.com/about.html

In particular:

" Do not add games which are more recent than 3 years old, or which are still being sold new by the company that produced them. MAME is not intended to be a platform that competes with arcade games that are still being actively sold."

MetalSlug5 in particular has (c) 2003 on the title screen:
http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=12904

The NeoMAME developers are therfor breaking 2 of the MAME license conditions by adding this game, and using the "MAME" trademark.

elvis,

how many genuine arcade PCB boards do you own for the games you play using mame?? because they should equal the number of games on your games list!!!. Your very quick to point out that i am trying to stop income of hard working developers, but fail to realize that what you are in fact doing is illegal and robbery in itself.

Not adding games less than 3 years old is 'discouraged' in the readme, but not required in the licensing.  Thats what I'm talking about when I say its an invisible line in the sand.  If tm asked this question 6 months from now (when the game would be 3 years old) would everybody be cheery and helpful to him instead of calling him a criminal, hacker, rom leecher, etc?
