Replacing hood, fender, wheel well cover part
« on: June 08, 2005, 11:25:58 am »

Okay, someone smashed in the front end of my mother's car and drove off (it was parked).  The car isn't really worth very much (mid 90s Corsica) and I anticipate her insurance company telling her to screw.  She still owes a couple grand on the car.

I'm not a car guy but am handy with tools, etc.  How difficult is it, usually, to source said parts and replace them yourself?

This is, of course, assuming that the front end is not substantially damaged, but we'll cross that bridge once the adjustors look at it.

Well as far as junk yards go around here there are hundreds of corsicas so if they're as abundunt in your area parts shouldn't be a problem to find.  Most the cars I have worked on have a inner and outer fender.  The outer one usually just bolts on while the inner is welded.  As long as the inner isn't damaged too bad it's fairly simple.  The hood is pretty easy as well as long as you have two people.  It isn't that bad.

Replacing the parts is easy enough, provided the unibody isn't damaged. Even what looks like minor damage to the unibody can cause parts to not fit at all. If the unibody needs to be straightend you really need to get it on a frame machine, which can be pretty expensive.

Yeah, I assume the insurance company will have someone look at the frame.  Junkyards are NOT common around here.

The part that sucks the most is that it had to have been someone in her apt complex.  My mother can't afford to have this fixed, i'm going to have to clean all of this up (not that I can really afford it either).
