Ultrastyle in its default listing (all roms) is horrific if you have a complete romset. However if you build custom lists or use filters for game type it is quite easy to find the game you are looking for without scrolling the wheel for 30 minutes to get to your game of choice.

I have machines running Ultrastyle, MAMEWAH, and GameEx front ends and each has its finer points.

Most people realize that I'm bias but my view of comparing emulation software  has two important criteria:

1. Is it being actively developed, enhanced and bug fixed

2. Is support available.

Many FE's meet criteria 1 but IMHO none can compare to MameWAH on item 2.

just curious, but why run another front end program with MAME32?

In cabinets most people want to hide the appearance of Windows as an operating system.

Because when you are trying out new games or want to scroll through 5000 titles quickly, it is hard to beat Mame32.

I guess my confusion was that i thought that i had read on here before that it's preferable to run the DOS versions of MAME with a front end program instead of using the MAME32 version.

Ahhhh, a common mistake. The usual preferred version is actually the Windows 32bit command line version. There are basically two versions of Mame . The DOS version and the 32bit Windows commandline version. Mame 32 is simply the latter packaged in a windows GUI.

So there is the DOS version and the MAME32 version and most people prefer to run MAME32 and a front end program that masks the windows GUI that is built in?

There isn't a MAME32 and a MAME32 command line version, right?

Available at the Mame website, www.mame.net:

1. Windows commandline version
2. Windows commandline version (Pentium Pro Optimized)
3. Dos version
4. Dos version (Pentium Pro Optimized)

Since Mame is open source there are many enhanced/hacked versions floating around. Many add features and functionality. Mame32 is on of those. It simply wraps item number one from above in a Windows GUI.

Most from ends recommend using item number one above. That being said, there is nothing keeping you from having item number 1 above AND Mame32 on the same machine. They can both share a common rom, snaps, samples and so forth folders.

Thanks guys.  My cab is in it's finishing stages and i need to get the most current software and decide which is best for me (as i'm on a deadline to have it done before i have a party next week).  I'll have to look into the Pentium Pro versions also.

I know it's not a listed option, but it doesn't get much easier than Game Launcher. It handles short lists as easily as long lists. It only takes about 5 minutes to set up. So it really only takes you 5 minutes to figure out if you like it or not.

Game Ex's forums are really helpful and in English. I haven't seen any French except one or two files that come packaged. Maybe you just hit the wrong website? I love Game EX. My only beef with them is there is a lack of premade skins and I'm too lazy to make my own.

Try few of them , and you will see quickly the one you like more.

Some are more for PC with windows looks, others are optimized to be used in Arcade Cabinet.

you can have a look to my AtomicFE .  If you have question or need help you can post on this forums i come here every days. Or you can contact me directly by mail.  I will be more than happy to help you.

Ive looked at all of the frontends, like my earlier post im using ultrastyle in a slikstik cab with a 27" betson, ultrastyle is great it just takes to long to find a game, i down to two frontends, mamewah & atomic fe, mamewah looks to be a pain to setup im going to try atomic, i have a couple of questions.
1. should i use version .12 or .11 pro
2. It looks like this frontend will play the videos like ultrastyle
3. I also assume i can use this fe for daphne & project 64
thanks
