Font management for Windows
« on: June 07, 2005, 07:13:42 pm »
Over the years, I've collected about a squillion and a half fonts. Last time I checked, a font search brought up 27,000 TTF, OTF and PS fonts littered in a bunch of folders on my hard drive. I know that there's no way I can possibly have that many fonts, and I know that the vast majority of them are just duplicate files- but how can I consolidate everything into one nice clean collection?

I'm looking for something that will move all my font files into one place and remove all the duplicates.

Anyone know of something that does this?

Mac or PC?

Check out Font Reserve.  They have a trial and they swing both ways (Mac and Win)   I haven't used it, but I found it while Googling

Also, you could just try a straight forward file comparing utility.  I use "Beyond Compare" and like it, but there are a ton of file compare, clone/duplicate file removal apps out there that might do what you want.

I use FXplorer for my fonts.  It works well.  It doesn't remove dups or anything though.  It can temporarily install a font so you can use it.  When you turn the puter off the font is gone.  I just have to remember to break the font apart.  I've broken my fonts into directories of the alphabet.  Some take more than one folder (ie T1, T2, T3) to keep less fonts in each scroll.  I found it a long time ago so there might be something better now.
Next I'll be on fries, and that's when the big money starts rolling in.
