Component ATI 9600 Toshiba 27A34 Question
« on: June 06, 2005, 09:47:15 pm »
I just installed the ATI 9600 component to the Toshiba 27A34 TV. I now have a lot of problems I can't figure out. Sorry if this has been posted, but I can't seem to track it down.
1. When booting the screen rolls horizontal to vertical until it boots into windows.
2. The windows screen doesn't fit on the TV screen, it is larger and you have to move your mouse to the sides to move the screen. I can't find a setting in Catalyst to fix this.
3. I get a lot of shimmering. It is almost unwatchable.
4. I also get ghosting to the left of any object on the screen.

I then hooked it up to the S-Video and it fills the screen on the TV, no shimmering, I do still get the ghosting the the left.
I went into the service mode on the TV, but am not sure what everything does except for the V & H size and shift.
Any help would be great.
Thanks

Make sure you have the latest drivers. Run the catalyst and start the wizzard. Select 480i. Resoluton is 640x438 I beleive(doing this from memory).

THe screen will roll until windows starts. I don't have a ghosting issue though. THe shimmering is minimal, and not even noticable playing a game.

You might need to get a custom resolution tool as well. Power Strip seems to be the tool of choice for many HTPCers. Look online on google and whatnot for the resolution settings for your TV model. I know AVSForums has a good selection as does HTPCNews.com's forums. Might find help there as well. As for the screen roll until bootup, that seems to be a pretty common issue as well. I just ignore it since it stops once the bootup sequence reaches a certain point. One note of caution though, power strip and custom res tools can damage a TV with wrong settings. Unlikely and improbable as it may be, it CAN happen. But, it will likely fix your issue as well. A little good news bad news there.

I started using an ATI AIW 9000 with S-Video, but after reading that component is the way to go. I decided to get the 9600. What I also noticed is that the 9000 on S-Video looks pretty good compared to the 9600. The 9600 has a lot of dots on the screen that you can either freeze or let them move around. The 9000 doesn't have this problem at all. I wonder if the latest 9600 drivers fixes this. You can see the dots on the 9600 on either S-Video or component. I think it looks pretty bad.
I get ghosting to the left on both cards so there must be a setting on the Toshiba to sync this.

I would hate to think I just wasted $130 for a  new video card that looks worse than an old one. I wonder if the AIW are a better card overall because of the way it has to handle video.
Any thoughts?

Are you going to use the AIW for vid capture? New drivers should help the 9600. Is it the 9600XT or Pro? Just a few questions to know where you're coming from.

I just had the AIW 9000 laying around so I thought I would hook it up in the mame cab. It looks pretty good except for the ghosting. I wanted to try the component out on the Toshiba so I bought the Saphire 9600 Pro with the component adaptor. The drivers with the 9600 are 5.1. The first thing I noticed were the flicker and the larger dots on the screen. The AIW 9000 did not have the dots, it looked pretty smooth overall. I see the catalyst drivers has a setting for dot crawl for either freeze or move. either way it stinks. Any way to get rid of the large dots and smooth it over? Does the new 5.5 drivers fix this? The reason I ask is I took the 9600 out and put back the AIW9000 until I can find a solution. It is not too easy to make changes since I have to move the cab from the wall each time to get to the computer.
I wonder if it is just this card since no one has mentioned the crawl dots, just the flicker.
Thanks for your help

I'm not saying this is the problem but it may be the vid card. Saphire is a cheap knockoff of the ATI cards. It uses the same chipset and architecture but is not made by ATI. As a rule I usually only buy ATI cards made by ATI. Saphires can be a good card and I've seen systems with them that are great but it's kind of "hit or miss" with those things. You either get a good one or a bad one. My advice...return the Saphire and shell out a few more dollars for the ATI 9600 XT. I would be extremely suprised if you were not completely happy after that. If not though, stick the AIW in the MAME computer and use the Saphire for a regular computer. Others may have other advice but thats the best I can give you.

FYI, i just got the made by ATI 9600XT for $130 from Circuit City, so it shouldn't even be more expensive than the Sapphire card that you are using.

I couldnt' find an actual made by ATI 9600XT locally or on the web. I orded the Sapphire from Newegg.com for $70. The additional cost was the dongle and the component cables. I have read other posts were they have been happy with the Sapphire card. I will have to try new drivers and see what happens.
Thanks
