Is there any easy way of telling how big ram is?
« on: June 01, 2005, 04:16:53 pm »
An aquantance of mine dropped of a couple sticks of RAM the other day in the hopes that I could tell him how large they are.  On one it has a sticker with HYM7V651601 on it and entered into Google gives me 128megs pc100 SDRAM.

The other one I'm having a little harder time finding though.  It too is SDRAM (I can tell by the pins), it's made by Siemens or it at least has Siemens chips on it although I don't know if companies even do that (take one manufacturers chips and place them on their own sticks) and it's got the following codes listed in the apriximate way shown here on a sticker.

Code: [Select]
G0149.1 5000239
  VT QC 52579

I can't seem to find anything about it with any of those numbers though, so I was wondering if maybe there's a way to find out how large each chip is by it's code and add 'em all up.

The only computers I have are either a laptop or take DDR so I can't just pop it in and find out...  ???

And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

The PC should be able to tell you how much RAM you have in there, if you can't find it, try this program  http://www.ccleaner.com  its a free regestry cleaner that displays what your system specs are when running.(you have to install the Ram for it to read it obviously)

I'm pretty sure you can figure out how much memory is on each chip based on the numbers printed on them and add those up, but why not just pop it in a computer and see what gets reported during POST?

I guess you have a computer that will accept that formfactor of RAM or you wouldn't care.

The ram is not mine.  I do not have a computer that I can put it into as I stated before.  The ram belongs to an aquaintance of mine and what he needs the information for is beyond my knowledge of the sittuation.  He handed me the chips and asked if I knew how big they were now I'm trying to figgure it out.

I will see if I can come up with any results for the codes on the chips...

My google results are that each chip is 64M and with a total of 16 chips that gives me 1024M.  Now what is it that I need to divide that by to get the MB?  I would assume it's either 8 which would make the chip 128MB or 16 which would make it 64MB...  That assumption is based on the fact that I doubt he'd have a 256/512/1024 though which may or may not be the case.

It's 8.
8 bits to the byte.

I'd say about 8-10 inches on a good day...

Oh... Um... You were talking about computer parts huh?

(Seriously, I'm surprised no one beat me to this one...)

Anyhow, I've never had much luck relying on the markings on the chips on Memory. I've had a 128 & a 256 that had nearly identical markings & there was no way to easily calculate the amount of memory either had.

Aside from inserting it in a PC, I wouldn't know how else to figure it out. (Unless your findings above hold true)
I'm not a freak!...
Oh wait...
Yes I am...

Download Advisor, run in it on your PC, and it will tell you everything you could possibly need to know about your machine.

If you notice the answers they are assuming it is IN your system, it looks like you want to know when it is out of the system.  This is a stupid thing about older memory, they often didn't put a sticker or something on it telling you how big it was.  They only good way is to stick it in a system and find out :)

Yeah, we're assuming he would pop it in a PC, seeing as how it's the only way to find out most of the time.
