Lots of Miscellaneous Questions......
« on: May 27, 2005, 07:44:32 pm »
Hey, I am new to the site and have a lot of random questions.  Hopefully, someone can help me out with some of them.  Thanks!

1)  How do you do fatalities in Mortal Kombat II?  I have the arcade version( it is my only game, right now).

2)  How long does it take to build your own cabinet, and approximately how much would it cost?  Also, does anyone have plans for an original Mortal Kombat II cabinet?

3)  On the topic of building cabinets.........is there much of a market for them, and how much do they usually sell for(just built, that is).  I have for a while debated about trying to make and sell cabinets, but was wondering if it was worth it.

More questions are sure to come.  Thanks alot!

try gamefaqs.com for moves.  There is a section for arcade games.

One guy made a cabinet in 24 hours but the rest of us do it in a year.  Depends on your skill and time.

I think the market is a bit flooded for cabinet makers, unless you have a real jump start like mameroom.com .  There is a guy with a fantastic cabinet on this site who has been just tring to get  what he put into it and he can't.

Read the faqs on this board and the main site, it has a ton for the basic questions.  There is also saints book "Project Arcade"  It has the answer to these and many more questions like it in fantastic detail.

The time it takes to build a cabinet can really vary.  I've been working on my first cabinet since last August.  Doing a little here and there.  All I have left to do is purchase and install the arcade monitor (will post pics in Project Announcements when Completed).  I could have done it all in a week or less if I had all the parts (i.e money) at the start.  Also the quality of cabinet you want to build, access to proper tools, etc. can really determine the time it takes to build it.  My best advise is to use the vast knowledge that can be found on this forum.  I found this forum about a month or so into my construction and it has been invaluable.  While I have not posted often, I read everything I can and lurk in the shadows.

The type of cabinet I would be building would be without monitor and control panel............just the bare bones cabinet.  And yes, I have the proper tools.....just wondering how many people actually bought them, and at what price.

Take your time when you build a cabinet, make sure everything is done neat and sound, make sure you have something to play on so you don't rush your work just to play quickly.

You will feel so great when you finish if you take your time and do all the little things.

If you're going to sell a cab still take your time, otherwise it will look like it was thrown togeather, on the one you keep make it special.

Doing THAT is essentially a money losing venture. People just don't want to pay hundreds of dollars for a homebuilt wood cabinet when they can get a used cabinet (usually MUCH higher quality), that usually comes with assorted other add ons for FREE-$50.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I have built 2 cabinets and started a third.

The last one I built was a copy of a Galaxian, just 4.5" shallower.  Built it out of a single 49x97" sheet of 3/4" melamine. (white plastic laminated particle board). Also needed a smaller sheet of melamine at around $8 for more cross-pieces.

Wood costs: $30
Polyurathane glue (like gorrilla) $ 4

Total cost: $34 or so.. a few misc piece of scrap wood for bezel supports, etc...

However here is the list of tools I used (I already had) and the approximate price you'd have to pay if you don't have them at a place like Menards or Harbor Freight:

- Table saw ($100)
- 10" Sliding compound mitre saw ($100)
- Jig Saw ($10)
- Random obital sander ($25)
- 3/8" VSR Drill ($10)
- Bar clamps: ($10)
- Ratchet nylon strapping (when gluing cabinet): $20
- Router: ($50)
- Straight router bit set ($10)
- Drill bit set ($5)
- Chisels/Square/Tape measure/Level/Screwdrivers... ($20)
- Tmolding router bit: ($15)
- Saw horses ($15)
- Earmuffs/dust masks/etc... ($5)

Total: About $395 in reusable hardware.
