mp rom question(sonic)

I'm running mame v89 and while sorting through my roms I tried several mp(mega play) versions (mp_sonic,mp_ga2) that worked the first time I launched them but ever since I cannot get them to start.Anyone else get these games to launch with mame or are they supposed to run with a different emulator?
