nVidia with Happs Questions
« on: May 25, 2005, 06:57:19 pm »
I've got a GF4 Ti4200 in my rig, and just bought a VGA/SVGA 27" from Happs.

The question I have is whether the video card can be forced to only allow acceptable resolutions.
The monitor will do 640x480 and 800x600 at 60 Hz.

I currently have MAMEWah set to 1024x768, and plan to change all that before firing up the new monitor, but I'm worried about some other game I forgot about trying to switch the resolution to 1024x768, or 1280x1024.

I have the video card set to "only display resolutions that this monitor is capable of", but am worried that the card may ALLOW other resolutions, by allowing applications to override the settings on the card.

I did some playing around with this tonight, and ran into a few mysteries.

1) The lowest available setting in WinXP is 800x600.
I've never had to worry about setting monitors that low until now, but is 640x480 no longer available in Windows?

2) The available settings includes 1024x768, which the monitor is not SUPPOSED to be capable of.
The owner's manual is very specific about which modes are built-in, and not to run outside those parameters.

It seems to be stable at the 800x600 60Hz setting, but I'm still worried about it accidentally swapping resolutions for no reason.

Any suggestions?

If you want winxp to go to a lower resolution you can go into your control panel, open up the display properties, click on the settings tab, then select the advanced button, after that select the adapter tab, then click on the list all modes button.  There you will see a list of resolutions that your vid card supports and you can choose which one u want to use such as 640x480.

As far as not running the monitor past its specs the only thing I can think of is that you will want to make sure all your emulators are set to run at 640x480 or 800x600.  I take it that the computer does not recognize the type of monitor and its capabilities.

Just curious, is that monitor capable of running all of the horizontal frequencies between 31 and 38khz or can it only run at 31 or 38?  I was also wondering what the dot pitch was like on that monitor.  Does the monitor look more like an arcade monitor or a high resolution pc monitor?

I did that, but I'm still worried about installing a new game, etc... and having it default to 1024x768, or something like that.

I'll have to look at the specs again, when I get home.

It IS an arcade monitor, and looks more like that than a PC monitor.
They are the stock monitor in one of the PGA Tour Golf machines, or something like that.

It gets fuzzy near the edges due to the severe deflection necessary for it's size.
I don't know how much it will clean up because I haven't played with anything on the chassis for it yet.
It works great for games out of the box, but small text suffers on it.
Vector stuff is playable, and looks OK, but isn't near the clarity of a PC monitor.

The spec sheet lists the Horizontal Scanning Frequency as "30-50 KHz (TBD)".

I can't guarantee that the specs are right though.
They are a little suspect to me, considering that the Happ's guy told me it will only run 800x600 at 60 or 70 Hz, and the book says it will do 75.

And thanks for the heads-up on the 640x480.
It worked great.
