How should I dispose of a UPS
« on: May 23, 2005, 10:53:31 am »
I've got a near-dead uninteruptible power supply that I need to dispose of.  I don't want to just toss it in the trash cos it's just a big battery.  Does anyone know what a person in a small town does with one of these?  Will Autozone take it?  :)  They take car batteries.

you could always replace the battery... and save the old battery for "hazardous item day" at your local dump/landfill.

Usually they have them this time of year too (spring cleaning and all) so you may just luck out.  They take all sorts of things like used engine oil, paints, solvents and yes even batteries.  Depending on how your town does things you should call the dump if they have a # or the town/city hall for info on when it happens.

But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still

Heh, I thought you meant one of the guys in brown suits! I thought "well good, someone finally got sick of brokerage fees and did something about it!"

This is when it really comes in handy to have your own seige engine. I just hurl that kind of stuff into the neighbor's yard. ;)

I hope your seige engine is pretty strong.  These things are bloody heavy.  It ain't going to fly as far as a cantelope.  By the way, that thing is badass.  It brightens my day so much when I see people spending significant amounts of time building nonsense like that.   :)

Not a problem. Keep adding counterwights & it'll throw pretty darn heavy stuff. One of these days I'm going to try to hang a dead engine block in place of the existing counterwieght. Yes, it's useless, but boy it's a lot of fun. :)

Stingray, nice machine!

When I lived in NC, they had a yearly Punkin' Chunkin' contest 8-10 lb punkin nothing more than human power and leverage could be used in the chunkin'.

Somebody bought a Navy artillery tube and rigged up a piston, old bike, and gearing to pressurize the firing chamber.  When they found the camera taped inside the Punkin over 400 yards away, it made for interesting footage!

Shmokes, in your Yellow/White Pages there should be a landfill or waste management-type place listed that should have a hotline/answerline for how to deal with 'em.  If you've got a Batteries Plus (or similar place, all they sell is batteries) I've dropped stuff off with them and they deal with it, no charge.

I remember when I bought my UPS it actually had some insert blurb about recycling. If I did, then they would give me credit towards a replacement battery. You might want to look up the manufacturer and see if they have a program like that? Also some hobby shops and home improvement stores have ni-cad recycling programs. Check them out, They might be able to take it also... I'm sure you really NEED an excuse to go into those types of places anyways... ;D
