Candy from when you were a kid.
« on: May 21, 2005, 02:13:03 pm »
I just ordered some Zots and Smartie Pops from oldtimecandy.com I used to have a smartie pop in my mouth as I played video games like Sprint 2 and pinball machines like Grand Prix.

I was just wondering what other candy was available when you were a kid. I know I used to eat more than these two but these are the only ones I could remember and find. Good stuff.

Edit: Crap, as I am looking through the site, I see I missed a few things I should have ordered.

My brother and I always got the gummy coke bottles and ate them while we played at the arcade in the mall.  :D

Seems strange that those two places would be visable from each other.

In Australia we had ---daisies---, little white candy sticks with red on the end, it made you look older and cooler sucking on these because people thought you were smoking.  8) You could spin the candy in your mouth while you were sucking and if you did it long enough you could make candy really pointy. They changed the name later on from ---daisies--- to Fads and removed the red bit on the end, I'm not sure if the name change was forced due to the anti-smoking movement or something to do with discrimination against homosexuals.  :P

I could swear that there actually is no "sugar" in "Pixy Stix" but rather somthing like maltodextrin or something...

I don't even remember of this stuff, someone can probably refresh my memory. Basically you got this white sugar stick and three or four pouches of flavored sugar. You lick the sugar stick and put it in the flavored sugar, lick it off and repeat. What the heck were those things called?

The thought of eating on now kind of makes me nauseous and gives me a headache, but I sure loved 'em when I was a kid.

Ah, Lik-M-Aid Fun Dip. I'm pretty sure that back in the '70s it was just called Lik-M-Aid, but that's the stuff all right. I googled up this entertaining read, which pretty well sums up my experiences with the stuff.

Quote
I'd buy one, sneak to a spot where no one could see me, and pour the three envelopes of sugar down my throat as quickly as possible. Then I'd return to the shack and repeat the process. Over and over again. Endlessly. These ballgames weren't things of finesse, but they were played at length. By the time the 7th inning rolled around, the amount of Fun Dip in my intestines would've supplied enough energy to hit that damn ball straight to Mars. At least, that's what I was told. Everyone felt sorry for the boy who didn't play ball.

Honestly, I didn't care. The sixty-seven packets of sugar threw me on trips so intense, I barely knew where I was anyway. Most of the time, I thought I was in an alien zoo where all the strange, purple creatures were forced to don clothing advertising the local locksmiths and tackle shops while throwing around spiked maces drenched in fire. I'm not sure what's in Fun Dip, but it makes magical things happen. Plus, it's sand you can eat.

Good times. Good times. :)

Pop Rocks are available.  They went off the market for a while due to poor sales following rumors of kids stomachs exploding.  Mythbusters covered this on one of their episodes.

They used to have candy cigarettes when I was a kid.  I haven't seen them in years.

I loved Bottle Caps.  They are still around as well.

Typical summer afternoon from 85-89...
Get Garbage Pail Kids cards(with the crappiest dry piece of "gum" inside), Big League Chew, FunDip, and Nerds from the ice cream man and have a sugar high the rest of the day.  Ahhh, those were the days.  The occasional AbbaZabba was also a real treat.

I got my candy today and all I can say is, Zots rock! They are just as good now as they used to be. I was a little disappointed with the smartie pops though because they don't have the hard plastic stick with the hole in the center like they used to. They are just as tasty though. :) I ordered on the 21st and got it on the 25th. Not bad.

Here's what I used to eat:

Black Cow suckers

Slo-Poke suckers

Candy cigarettes

Pixie Straws

Suger Babies

M&M Peanut

Wax Lips

All these wonderful candies were only ten cents or less in price. Naturally if we ate too much sweets Mom would give us some chocolate Ex-Lax laxative!

I can't decide if you guys are making me feel old or nostalgic.  ;D

Personally, my sister and I had to have the wax bottles with flavored water (or whatever it was) every time we went by the local "dime" store (yeah, right - not when we were growing up, but that's what my parents called it).   We also loved the candy cigarettes mentioned earlier as well.

Fizzies - The alka-selter like tablet that made a flavored drink

Space Food Sticks - OK, not a candy, but not really food, either...

Dots on paper if I was really broke, because they'd last a long time.

Chick-O-Sticks - like Butterfingers without the chocolate.

Zero candy bars....yes they're still around but they aren't in all markets.  A frozen one at the public pool snack shop on a hot day...

Smith Brothers Wild Cherry Cough Drops

Cap'n Crunch ice cream bars

Anything from Grandma and Grandpa's candy jar.  I'm from a family of 7 kids and I think we've all found that same jar from antique stores and Ebay, because it was that important to us.

Red Hots, Cherry Chans, and Abba Zabbas... all still available, athough Cherry Chan has been renamed to Cherry Clan, I think...

There was another one I can't remember the name of... caramel covered in chocolate, two bands of it twisted together like a chain of rings...

I must have been about 10 when I ate a whole one pound bag of Goldberg's Peanut Chews minis (in one sitting). Needless to say, it didn't all stay down. I don't think I've had once since.

I did that with double stuff oreos when I was about 14 at my brothers apartment. Pretty much a waste of oreos. I didn't eat oreos for a while after that.

I did see a roll of Bottle Caps a year or two ago.  Mostlty they come in the flat type package like Skittles or M&Ms.

Rootbeer barrels were great too.

The Space Food Sticks were made by Carnation.

One candy that  I could never stand were those Circus Peanuts (Not actual peanuts), what the @#*& flavor were those sopposed to be? :P

Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!
