With Teeth - Further down the spiral?
« on: May 18, 2005, 12:36:16 pm »
Okay, I consider myself a pretty big Nine Inch Nails fan.  I've been there since the beginning and I've followed Trent through Nothing Records and a lot of his side projects. I was even into some of his pet projects (Marilyn Manson, Revolting Cocks, Rammstein) back before they got stupid.

But what's the deal with With Teeth?  Am I the only one who thinks the album is crap?  The Fragile was decent.  I had to listen to it a couple times before I really appreciated it and definitely not as good as his older stuff, but decent nonethe-less. With Teeth though, is just "further down the spiral"... if "the spiral" is "the toilet".

Clever lyrics were never Trent's forte, but come on!  Singing "Will you bite the hand that feeds you?" 50 times to make up the last 1/2 the song is nothing but filler to cover up 4 minutes of great background music. ..And that's not the only song that does it ("You Know What You Are", "Every day is exactly the same", "Only"...).

Ugh.  Is this what happens when people get old? They start pining for the "good old days" when they played "good" music and artists had "good" music to sing?

Maybe your problem was liking NIN in the first place, and "forcing yourself" to like The Fragile by listening to it a few times.  :D

There's plenty of awesome "industrial" music out there if you look for it. (hint: none of it gets played on the radio).

So, without telling me to "look at the reviews", can you recommend any good tracks to look at?  I don't think I'm about to spend some money on a CD for any of these bands.. I've been burned before, dammit!

um, why is rammstein a pet project of trent reznor? the only thing i can find that they have in \

Hmm, I guess they're not then!  For some reason I thought Nothing Records released Sehnsucht, but I guess I was wrong. *shrug*  Either way, what does that have to do with With Teeth sucking so hard? :)

I've never seen Lost Highway, but it's a pretty solid soundtrack!

That's pretty accurate, actually. This might very well be the first NiN Halo I don't buy (second? Was the single released first?).

The only way to hear good NIN music is to listen to Johny Cash forcing it to be good.  Trent Reznor has always sucked at making music, though Marilyn Manson has surprisingly made some good stuff (surprising to anyone who heard his first album at least -- the guy went through some kind of transformation between his first two albums).

Anyway....NIN always sucked.  It's just been so long since his last album that you aren't in high school anymore.

I hate the first song and the song near the end "that goes on and on and on"  I thought it was a joke at first.

My gf was, "Uhmm, your CD is skipping...".  I imagine that song playing in a Dentests office waiting room in hell.

I do like the last song, it reminds me of Skinny Puppy's Tin Omen track on Brap where it gets suddenly loud.  I always wondered how many people blew out their speakers on that song.

Anyone bother to listen to the album in the 5.1 DVD surround?

If you don't like the CD by itself you won't like it in 5.1.  :P but the 5.1 surround does sound very good.  The downside is that it makes the regular version sound worse once you hear it in 5.1

Anyway....NIN always sucked. It's just been so long since his last album that you aren't in high school anymore.

I wholeheartedly disagree.  It's probably just like anything else though:  You just have to be in the right time at the right place. It's not so much the lyrics in particular (by themselves they suck, frankly), but the entire meticulous composition of each track that makes up the the entire complex album.  Each album has a "story", similar to a movie ("The Wall"?) and I enjoy seeing how they all fit together.

I like "unique" music, and I think NiN is unique in that it's hard to listen to just one track of an album because in order to really get into the song and understand what's happening, you have to listen to the entire album. So if you're saying they "suck" because you've only listened to the songs on the radio, I challenge you to spend some time and listen to an entire album (Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, The Fragile - Left). Not just the lyrics, but the entire composition of each song and the album as a whole.

Sure, at this point, it's probably too "teenage-agnst", but indulge yourself for a bit and try and remember what it was like back then as you listen to it.

*shrug*  Those are my thoughts on Nine Inch Nails and why I've been following him/them for so long.

Damn, I like With Teeth, along with every other NIN album. Different strokes for different folks.
I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...
