My 1st real cab has some glitches I need help with.
« on: May 18, 2005, 12:51:05 am »
Okay I got my first real arcade machine (I have a mame machine already) the other day. My wife saw it at a garage sale and bought it for me. It is a Tutankham cabinet (Klov link), I've never heard of it, but so far it seems fun and such.

Anyways, I really know nothing about real arcades. And when I start to play this game everything seems fine, but after a little while the graphics seem to get glitchy. I really don't know how to explain it. Its like after I move my character on the screen  some of the pixels don't change back to the right color. Like the color gets stuck in some places. If you know what I mean. Ooh I thought of a better way to explain: Like the pixels do not refresh as often as they should or something.

Like I said I don't know anything about real arcades so I'm asking here for help. I would have put this in the monitor/video section, but I didn't know if it was a problem with the monitor or if its something on the board or something.

Well thats my problem. Also I don't really know what I'm going to do with this game. I'm guessing its not a conversion of any sort. It looks exactly like the one on KLOV, but aged. Anyones thoughts on what to do with this cab would be welcomed.

I can't help you with your problem, but I love Tutankham!  That game rocks and, because of your post, I'm going to go play it right now!

Sounds like video ram problems or voltage problems. Check your voltages. If you don't know HOW to check your voltages then you need to do some reading.

i agree voltage sounds like the issue.  I had the same problem, and this fixed it.

What a Woman!! My wife always comes back with clothes and baking ware :( Actually that's not entirely true. I told her we needed a new TV last year and within two days she found a fully working 27" TV with remote for $30.00! I must learn to harness this power for good instead of laundry.

Sorry. I can't help with the vid issue.

What condition is the cab in? Does it have side art?

I hate to sound sarcastic, but what do you think you should do with a video game machine? --PLAY IT!!

Seriously. Don't go hacking it up and MAMEing it or anything stupid like that. That machine isn't very common.

I have tested/working boardset, but it sounds like you have voltage problems.

Wow, thanks for all of the responses. I will for sure test all the voltages to see if there is any problems.

The cab is in decent condition. The metal bolts and the coin door is a bit rusted. It does have the sideart. One side is perfect, the other side has one side of the hilt-guard on the sword missing. It looks aged, but it still looks good. I wish my camera wasnt broken and I would just  take some pictures.

I didn't want to hack it up or mame it or anything. But I have no idea if this would be something, that someone would want. I would sell it if I knew someone wanted. I had never heard of it, till my wife bought. So if it was just before my time someone might want it for umm sentimental reasons maybe. I wouldnt know what it is worth anyways, so I'll probably keep it around in the den for now. Oh does anyone know what it would get if I did try to sell it, my wife would like it if she knew she got a good deal on it.  Hopefully I'll get the glitches fixed. Its only an annoyance though, its still playable.

And yeah my wife does find me some pretty good stuff when she is garage selling. She used to just pick up toys and such for our boy, but now that he has tons of toys she doesn't know what to look for. So she looks for me, she found me a set of 18v dewalt tools the other day for a good price as well.

If you ever want to know the going rate on a non-retail item, always check Ebay. I don't know if you're a frequent visitor of the site, but they have a section devoted to arcade machines and parts. I've found that doing general searches on a game will often turn up console versions of the same game. It's almost always better to focus your search inside the Arcade category.

That being said, sometimes a particular machine will be worth what it goes for on Ebay and sometimes it'll be worth more. However, a machine is hardly ever worth LESS than what it goes for on Ebay.

... well, let me add, just because one machine might sell for $xxx on Ebay does not mean that is its value.  Especially, ignore "buy It Now" prices. Alot of them are just ridiculous.

So your wife brings home a gift and you don't like it, is what it boils down to.  :D haha.  You should have no problem selling it, starting at maybe $200 and up.

Tutankham is a 2nd tier classic. Figure about $300 in average working condition.

My general pricing guide to games is as follows. Please note that ALL vectors and laserdiscs (conversion or otherwise) count as top tier.

Top tier games $500
2nd tier $300
Non-classic dedicated $200
Top tier conversion $200
Conversion $100

Top tier games. Pac-Man, Galaga, Ms. Pac, Galaxian, the early Williams games. 4 Slot neo Geo, Burgertime, Marble Madness, dedicated Golden Tee etc.

2nd tier. Tutankham, Gyruss, Time Pilot (most Konami pinout games fall in this category), Dedicated 19" Neo Geos, Space Invaders, Road Blasters, etc. Basically non "A list" games that are dedicated and have name recognition.

Non-Classic dedicated. These games can be from any era. Most black and white games, and stuff like Commando, Moonwalker, Bad Dudes, etc.

Top tier conversion. Mr. Do series, Golden Tee conversions, Neo Geo conversions, most 25" conversions.

Conversion. Everything else.

Alan, I didn't look on eBay. I'm a bit thick sometimes, I guess. My thoughts were, if I had never heard of it, then it surely wouldn't have been on eBay.

Ray, I never said I didn't like it. I just had never heard of it. I was really excited she got it for me actually. Now I can at least get a good look at the insides of a real arcade. Note: This is my first real arcade game, of course I like it. Even though I had never heard of it before, it was still a dedicated cab. That said when she told me she found a cab for me I was really excited, then when it was something I hadn't heard of I was a little disappointed. For the price though you can't beat it. That brings me to

GGKoul, she picked it up for $25. Not bad, eh.

Paige, thanks for the general pricing guide. I've never really had an idea on value of games. I've never had much money to buy any real games so this is really my first opportunity.

Anyways, thanks for everyones input. I still haven't had time to check any voltages. Hopefully I will be able to sort it out easily, if not I'll ask for help again.

Also, if you don't want it, or can't fix it then you should have NO PROBLEM trading it for something else. Its one of those games that have a minor little cult around it.

Thats good to know paige. One day I may just decide to trade it. For now though I'll just see if I can get good at it.

personally i consider Commando as a classic game (if not from the classic gaming era)

i think the value largely depends on the person buying and the nostalgia element the game has to them.

Pieman: One tip that hasn't been mentioned but usually is, is to check that all connections are nice and tight... nothing loose. This also includes the chips on the circuit board. You need to press them down and make sure they are snug in their slots.

** Do this with the power OFF and machine unplugged. DO NOT do this with anything monitor related. The monitor will still hold a charge that can seriously hurt you, if you touch the right part. **
