Newbie DIY coktail questions
« on: December 02, 2002, 01:40:00 pm »
Hi all,

Found this forum after deciding I want to build a MAME Pac-Man cocktail replica, and I had a couple basic questions I was hoping someone could answer.

1st off, I've read through some of the forum archives, and that has helped me answer a lot already.  I think I've got my plan pretty well fleshed out at this time, but I wanted some expert opinions.

My plan is to purchase a pre-cut but un-assembled cabinet from www.arcadedepot.com.  These cabs are made to pretty much the same dimensions as Kyle Lindstrom's Pac-Man cabinet specs.  I'm going with with DOS MAME and probably will be using ArcadeOS.  The joysticks and buttons will come from Happ, and I'll be using an I-PAC to interface with the PC.

My questions center mainly around the monitor/display.  I was batting around the idea of going with a PC monitor for a while, but after reading some threads on this forum, was last night pretty much settled on using the S-VID input of a TV instead.

Now, the arcadedepot.com cabinet's display cutout is made to perfectly fit a 19" VGA arcade monitor, and this is where I get confused.  I can buy a 19" Kortek VGA monitor, which will mount perfectly into the cab (http://www.competitiveproducts.com/montr1.html); but - will I be able to easily run MAME from my PC on the monitor?  I guess I'm not understanding how the Kortek VGA monitor hooks up, is it a standard PC connector??  Or, if I get the Kortek, do I enter the realm of getting a J-PAC and running the video through there?  Is this Kortek VGA what they call a "hybrid" monitor?

Basically, I want know know if I should use: A) PC Monitor, B) TV, C) Kortek (arcade?) monitor.

Also, I was trying to figure out what size TV I would need if I went that route... when they spec those Kortek VGA monitors at 19", is that the same way they spec TVs and PC monitors?  Like 19" but only so much viewable measured across the diagonal?  What size TV would most closely match the viewable size of th Kortek VGA monitor?

I'm just trying to do this as easily as possible, so I'm mulling my options here.  FYI, I've test-run my MAME games on a PC monitor in vertical mode and they look fine to me, haven't tried a TV yet - but I'm sure I'd be OK with it, so the display quality is less of a big deal to me, and I wont be running Win on the PC, only MAME games.

Thanks so much in advance for any and all info/suggestions. Sorry for such a long post!  Take care all.
