I've often wondered if there would be a market for computer space reproduction cabs. If you had one to pull a mold off of, one person could crank out a couple in a weekend.

Nah, I'd rather go fishing. :)

It's been brought up on RGVAC so many times... I would definitely consider one depending on price.

It's pretty much a moot point in any case since I've never known anyone who's had one. I do have pretty extensive fiberglass experience though. I'm pretty sure it would be snap to pop out a few if you only had a mold to work with. The problem of course, is getting someone who owns such a rare & unique cab to let you pull a mold off of it.

What is involved with pulling the mold?  Would there be risk of damage to the original?

In a nutshell you wax the origianal, apply mold release, then gelcoat, then fiberglass. If done correctly the chances of damaging the original are minimal, but of course it's impossible to say 100% that it wouldn't be.

Right.  If I had one, I'd do it... I've always wanted a Computer Space, even a repro would do for me.

sadly, much like Mame and all the multi's, it would severely lower the value of the authentic things and only lead to scammers pawning off the repro's as original.

Not if the people creating the repros made it different enough that it can't be mistaken for an original... maybe casting the word REPRODUCTION into the fiberglass in the back or something.

Plus, the value of the originals is not my concern.

Clearly this would be the only ethical way to go about it. Of course if someone really wanted to they could alway grind off the word "Reproduction" and repaint it.

Couldn't you put it on a piece of paper or something similar and place it IN the fiberglass, under whatever is the finishing layer?

unless it was displayed in a prominent location on the cab somebody would simply get the dremel out and create a hole

You can come up with a way to 'hack' at the thing for anything I could come up with... but really, is that a reason NOT to make them?  It's not like he'd be making them en masse if it happened.

Sure, but the finish is just paint, which would obviously cover it. I guess you could do this on the inside. But like you said, there would always be a way to defeat any type of reproduction markings that you tried to incorporate.

Without something to take a mold from, I'd imagine it would be about 50x more work.

True.  Can you do fiberglass around something made of clay?   Seems like a model could be made up.  Particularly if you were looking for a mini/bartop version.

Actually,

In some reading I've done on fiberglass work.  You can make a mold out of Styrofoam.  Then you paint it with housepaint (to protect the foam) bondo out the imperfections and make your mold from that.

Not that I've ever actually done it, but I know it can be done.

This is the

That's more or less the way it's done of you're starting from scratch. However, like Chad said, you're looking at quite a lot more work.

i'd buy one...so who's gonna make them already?

seriously though, i'd like one made after the two player cabinet version, so that little control pod thing didn't make the cab look so un-symmetrical.  i never have even played the game and i'm willing to spend the dough.  i guess that's why i'm a BYOACer...cause i'm a fanatic.

A friend of mine owns a computer space. The game play vintage 70's to say the least. He doesn't like to even turn the thing on becuase he is always afraid it won't work and there is no one around to fix it. I could see him purchasing a repo made with modern electronics.

I love it. Except for the collision detection (your ship has a big collision box around it). Lets just assume that the missiles are proximity missiles... big proximity. And I love the way you can steer the missiles.
