Yamaha Sound Card Dos
« on: May 13, 2005, 09:22:41 am »
I know dos sound card questions get asked all the time, but i am sorry, i am just having too much trouble.

First of all i am working on a toshiba 2805-s503 laptop and just installed dos 7.1 on it. This is my first time setting up dos on a mame box, but i wanted to give it a shot. Ok so i installed the Yamaha sound card drivers from here http://vsynchmame.mameworld.net/. Then i tried to to run mame but got no sound.

I thought i had done something wrong, but then i realized that with the Yamaha drivers was a test utility. So i went to try it out, and BAM i have sound. I was quite surprised actually. But the only strange thing is that in the sound test there are the choices for the sound. "Native 16Bit Sound" "Sound Blaster 8Bit Sound" and "FM Sound". The only problem there is that the Sound Blaster option is grayed out and it wont let me use it.

Is this a problem, does my sound card have to be able to produce Sound Blaster sound in order for it to work with mame, or is there some way i can use the Native Sound?

Did you...

1. Keep IRQ 5 free.
2. Keep I/O 8000h free.
3. Run "setupds /s" in pure dos.
4. Run "ymfirq 5 edge".
5. "SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4" <---this goes in your Autoexec.bat file

(from the read me of that driver package)

If thats not it you may have to enable sound blaster compatibility in your BIOS...some CMOS setup programs have this as an option.

also...and I hope you didn't miss this you have to run MAME with the -soundcard 1 switch.

Hope this helps...if it does...next time...RTFM...thats all I did...  ;D

IRQ stuff may be configurable in the BIOS.
