Problem with resolution?
« on: May 10, 2005, 11:30:57 pm »
I recently switched monitors.  I am currently running a 20" Veiw Sonic.  When I attempt to launch certain games (Simpsons Fighter game, Elevator Action 2) the screen goes kind of crazy, like the horzt. hold is off.  This did not happen with my previous monitor.  I am running mamewah.  Any suggestions would be appriciated.

ps. This is my first post.  I have been watching this board for about 9 months.  You guys are great.

Thanks

Sorry if this is 'double posting'.  How do you 'edit' a post?

What I want to say is that the games seem to load, the display is just 'crazy'

Your monitor apparently doens't like the the resolution you chose. Pick a simple one that most monitors can handle (like 640x480) and give that a shot.

Don't let the game chose the resolution for you. Lock one in for yourself. Try that.

Before work today I tried it (mame.exe [game] -r 640x480) and it worked.  Is it wise to set this res as a default?  Is there a list of optimum res. for games?

I am going to look/research around to see how to set this up in mamaewah now.

You can use that switch in mamewah as a default setting. That way it'll set in at 640x480 for every game and you won't have to fiddle with improper settings.

Of course, this bumps a game's default resolution up to a VGA resolution. If you're bothered by the way the image looks, you can try out advancemame. I haven't messed with it in forever, but it ought to support the same basic MAME switches (like -r 640x480) plus it has some nice built-in video features for "dumming down" the image to make it look more authentic. That's all covered on their website, though.

Hope that helps!

I made the addition to my mame.ini file and it is working like a champ.
