King Arthur killed my Xbox mod
« on: May 07, 2005, 11:41:13 pm »
My GF rented the new movie release King Arthur on DVD last nite while i was out, and wouldnt you know it when i went to go use my xbox today the Dash was updated to a post XBlive one. So now i cant use my XBMC, or do anything..
i looked at the disk and theres no indication on it to give you fair warning that this disk is going to modify the firmware of your xbox..
This <auto-censored> is ridiculous.. Chronicles of riddick did the same thing..and i learne my lesson, but my GF had no idea so i cant get mad at her.. but i am mad..
they should be required to disclose that a movie dvd is secretly hiding a spyware xbe.

I agree. I would complain to the rental store and movie maker
I heard of on line crap doing it. Never would have dreamed a movie would.
I think a call to the BBB is in order.

movie sucked to boot at that.

Honestly, you should just get a modchip.  They're not too expensive and they are friggin cake to install!  The only thing you have to worry about with a modchip is getting banned but don't you have to worry with a softmod too?
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

It didn't modify your firmware.

The DVD has an Xbox game demo on it. It updates your dashboard on your C drive to the one that is included with the game.

I am guessing that you were soft modded or 1st gen modchip?

im softmodded.
i can likely downgrade my dash, but what a pain in the ass.
Its like buying a video game for your computer that without warning or consent alters your operating system.
there should at least be a dialogue, "do you want to do this" ..instead as soon as the disk is inserted it alters your xbox..

At least you were out and didn't have to sit through the movie...  That would've been adding insult to injury.   ;)

If this was a game-specific dashboard it was installing, why doesn't MS have anything to say about DVDs modifying the dashboard on their consoles?  Seems like they'd want to keep tighter control over that sort of thing, in case they ever release an "official" dashboard update of any sort...

Someone should release a movie that automatically installs one of the custom dashboards off the 'net onto any Xbox it's inserted into...  Maybe like a new special edition of "Hackers" or something.  :P

Of course you guys know AOL's been doing this sort of thing for years.... every time you install certain gameses  (:P), when you go back to your desktop, there's a new AOL link to install software virtually EVERY time...  same thing if you use the AIM messenger.... random installs of the stuff to install their internet software....

It's nothing new...

No offense, but buy a DVD player.  Problem solved.  I got a Cyberhome from Radio Shack for $29.99 when it was on sale w/mail-in rebate.  It plays everything I've thrown at it, plus there is a hidden menu option to set it to Region 0 (plays all regions).

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best solution.

Well...I guess buying a new DVD player would work...but that's kinda like saying the best solution to your kid leaving their rollerskates on the stairs is to have a firepole installed.  It's pretty reasonable to want your kid to just quit doing things that suck.

Not really....   You can reason with your kid.  You can't reason with Microsoft.  And I know a child won't start quoting some obscure legal text from a license agreement about how you granted him the right to leave rollerskates on the stairs when you conceived him.

I agree with Dave K., buy a DVD player - leave the XBox for the games.

they should be required to disclose that a movie dvd is secretly hiding a spyware xbe.

Nah....Dynagod is still right.  He's just venting, not bringing a lawsuit.  He didn't say that Microsoft doesn't have the legal right to do this.  He said that they should]/b] be required to disclose to the customer that changes are being made to the customer's property before said changes are made.  Perfectly reasonable.  And if Microsoft can legally do it, they still shouldn't be able to.

The fact that a person can go out and spend money on a second DVD player (when they already have one hooked up to their TV) doesn't excuse MS from making permanent changes to someone else's property without any explicit notification or authorization.  And many people might not want another DVD player.  Maybe the person's TV only has one set of inputs, which means the added expense of a swtichbox in addition to the new DVD player.  Maybe a person doesn't have the space for another component.  For some people $25 is a lot of money -- maybe the person already spent a year saving up to get the Xbox.  I

It's all irrelevant anyway.  MS simply should not be allowed to make changes to my property without notifying me, and obtaining authorization from me.  How would you like it if you bought a new PDA and when you installed Activesync it set Internet Explorer as your default browser and Windows Media Player as the default player for all your media files?  How would you like it if all of this happened in the background without Activesync ever asking your permission or even giving any indication of what it was up to.  I mean, sure.  I person can always sync on a different computer than the one that they use for web browsing and listening to music/watching videos.  Or a person can always get a Palm Pilot.  But that doesn't change the fact that it is crappy behavior that should not be allowed.

Jesus.....this is getting long.  I could go on and on.  Sorry.

well i guess all good things happen for a reason.
luckily my evox save game for Bond:AUF was still saved on the HD.
i could still ftp and just uploaded my stock backup of my xbox C: .
Dash downgraded.
I also finally installed DVD2XBOX. makes life MUCH easier. no more  dragging and dropping 3 gigs worth of  files back and forth between my xbox and pc, and also eliminates the need for craxtion for patching.
SO all in all i guess  it worked out.
